Hi

I have got a new Quaker parrot a week back. It is getting scared if I put my hand in the cage to take it. But it is eating food, drinking water making noises etc etc...

Not sure how much time it takes for quaker parrot generally to get used to.

This is a 3 month old

Can somebody help me what should I do to make my Hanuma ( I gave the name to the bird) to get used to me

Please help

Thanks & Regards

Welcome to the forum!!!! :)

Will Hanuma come out on his/her own??? Open the cage to see if Hanuma will come out, leave the door open and wait patiently. IF not, offer treats to bribe Hanuma out of the cage. It's very hard to train them within the cage, you must have them out of it to train. So right now don't stick your hand into Hanuma's cage cause that's gonna freak them out and your also invading their safe zone. Once you have Hanuma trained, then you can try to put your hand within to see. There's different training methods that work for different owners, but the most popular one is the clicker training. You can view videos on clicker training off YouTube, it's pretty self explanatory as all have the basics to show you how. Then follow it from there.

Thanks for the suggestion

He tries to come out of the cage. If I take him out forcefully (Which I don't want to do) and leave him out. He does walk in the room, but I try to hold him again to put him back in the cage. he runs away from me.

I tried giving him shower by spraying a solution that I got from pet store. But not shower that is the right way to bath him.

So if I understand you are recommending to train him to come out of the cage by himself and then train him through clicking, is that correct?

Have you tried using a stick to get him out if he won't come out? You can also get him to step up to the stick while out when you want to put him away. You basically use two sticks, then practice step up back and fourth between the sticks. Then offer your hand once he's more comfortable. You can bathe him using just plain water in a spray bottle and put the setting in mist!

And yes you can wait until he comes out of the cage by himself and train him by using a clicker. That would be a way to go!
