13yr. old male umbrella cockatoo,
we call him Amigo!

7yr. old Goffin cockatoo, she IS Sassy!!
I have Sassy's cage set up in our living room, our kitchen living room area is open concept so when I'm busy in the kitchen, I can see her. She has SO much fun just playing on her own! She has her very active times and totally knows how to entertain herself, something that Amigo never got the hang of.

What a character this bird is, she hops around on top of her cage and sometimes seems to be carrying on a conversation with her invisible self. I gave her an envelope and she spent an hour shredding it, she has a string hanging from her cage that holds a small key, to open the lock on her cage, she just wove that around the bars.

Amigo is still getting his quality time from me, we just got back from a walk. My husband is amazed at the difference in their size. He always thought Amigo was a medium sized bird, compared to Sassy,,,he is HUGE! BTW, she is SASSY!, her name fits!!

Love it! I'm even more jealous now!!! So happy for you. I can't wait to bring my baby Goffin home.....I actually found a playtop cage from A&E cages 24 x 22 x 64 and I got this awesome Manzanita Tree play stand ..... But I'm not sure the cage is big enough? What are your thoughts? My breeder tells me not to go bigger because the bird needs to be out of the cage. Basically he will be in there for sleep time and when we aren't home and not able to bring him with us. Do you think it's too small?

Sassy's cage is a bit smaller than that but is working, so far. I open her door in the morn and she comes and goes. Because she grew up in this cage and knows it well, I'm a bit leery about getting her something bigger...at least right now. I'm excited for you GiosMom! You will have a brand new baby that you get to form, VERY exciting!

I WISH YOU LIVED CLOSER! I would come visit.... It still feels like a dream! I'm trying to limit my bird visits to the bird store. I keep buying stuff because I feel bad for hangin out there so much. I'm going broke not too mention my husband is ready to kill me. The bird closet is already full. And to not create jealousy amongst "the littles" I keep it even so the dog gets something and my 4.5 yr old gets something.....Gio's got a pretty good gig he is smart...he tells me "oh mom Chico is going to love this and I'm going to love a new transformer" lol. The excitement in the house is really fun.....hows Amigo liking Sassy? Goffin's seem so high energy. I know 'Toos in general are high maintenance, but Goffin's are always moving and shaking their tail feathers. I have yet to experience one sleeping....do they?

That's awesome! Maui will have whispered conversations with himself, and his favorite toy is one of my old bras. He found it and chewed through the strap. So I took off all the plastic and metal and tied it to his cage. He loves to sit and shred it up.

hilarious:32: that would be my luck....I bought all these toys just about everyone in the store and my bird will want my bra or just a toilet paper roll.....love it!

Isn't that how it always works? He has tons of store bought toys and ones I made, but the bra he destroyed is his favorite! Lol

TortoiseLady, that is hilarious!! What type of cockatoo do you have? Sassy hasn't discovered my bra, yet! I remember buying mega toys for my young, (human), babies and they went for the box it came in! At least, we try, right? It can make a difference in the end.

Maui is an umbrella. Sometimes I will find him sitting there hiding his head inside it lol.

They are very high energy, I did not know this! When Sassy is not jumping all over the place, she is relaxed and sleeping. I'm stoked that she has acclimated so quickly. She will even come sit with me on the couch, her terms. I wait for her to be ready to accept me, then all is good.

Amigo and Sassy are getting to know each other from afar. When he comes in for the night, it is not in the same room. He will come hang on the slider window and stare at Sassy, freaks her out but getting less stressful.

Well I'm sure your making it easy for them both to adjust so well. Can't wait for photos. Have a good night!

Sugar is very similar. Lots of conversations with "invisible" someone's, shredding tons. I find that an old prescription pill bottle with the child safety caps and a couple of coins inside make fantastic foot toys! Sugar will flip it a few times, and then usually toss it on the floor from the side of the bed, expecting us to pick it back up so that she can do it again.

Sounds like she's adjusting well. Yay!!

I'm glad Sassy is doing well, isn't she precious!!!! The smaller toos are just hilarious! Our little Dixie would do funny head bobbing dance and act all crazy and we just laugh when we watch her. I would be real careful changing her cage, she probably would freak out but eventually get over it. During the beginning I would suggest in leaving a night light on for her during her conversion to a new cage, the first night when the light went off Dixie freaked in her new cage. But ever since then I've been leaving her a night light on regardless, same with all my birds. I find them much calmer with a night light on.

Does your umbrella cockatoo fly around outside whenever he wants?? i've read some of your other posts and was just curious haha never heard of someone giving their parrot their own free will to leave whenever and come back

Amigo's sleeping cage is in the back bedroom and when he wakes up I will normally feed and socialize with him in the living room, for at least an hour. He lets me know when he is ready to go out and play, he starts dancing on top of his cage and paying close attention to what's going on outside his window, his cage is next to the sliding door window. I'll open the door and away he goes. He doesn't go to far from home, normally, and comes and goes throughout the day. Then in for the evening.

I won't free fly Sassy, she's too tiny. A hawk might think her a delicacy!
