Hello everyone! I just signed up here and I have a bit of questions. Or specifically one, that I couldn't find a answer to. So I have owned birds before and I finally think I can manage a macaw. I find them so amusing. But I am currently staying in Las Vegas!! and I am 22. Now my question was that if I work or would like to go out for drinks one night would this not be appropriate for owning a macaw? There's lots to do and I know I can give him hours of attention, but from what I have read it's like you need to be with them all day. when I'm home I know I would give the attention needed. My only worry was say that I get invited out for drinks one night and stay out until morning? So basically can you have a social life with a macaw? :red1:

Well your bird should be asleep at night, so going out late in the evening shouldn't be an issue.

I would say 3+ hours of out of cage time, in your presence every day is needed for the "big" birds.

My guy get real cranky after 7 pm, so he's usually in bed between 7 and 7:30....so if I have a work function I go home, make us all dinner, spend some time with him, then go out when he calls it a night.

Thanks for the replies it really helped and of course I would not stay gone for days lol! But again thank you everyone!

Nope.

Once you buy a macaw, your social life is officially over!

You might as well move into a shack in the woods, and begin writing your ranting anti-social manifesto (which your macaw will be more than happy to turn into a shredder toy.)

No more dates.

No more parties.

No going out.

No more anything, except entertaining the bird, making bird toys, cooking for the bird, and cleaning up after the bird. THIS IS YOUR NEW PURPOSE IN LIFE.

GOD will judge you by your devotion to your bird... If the bird lacks for a single toy, you are going to be doomed to hell... (OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.)

Yes, Sheldon, that was sarcasm...

We have a bird sitter for date nights and other nights out. If you can't have them out someone has to. No skipping days out and attention with macaws.

(I miss Mark. Maybe silly to say since we've never met, but I love his comments in the older threads and they were superhelpfull when I was learning to deal with Sunny.)

EDIT--- JUST SAW THIS WAS AN OLD THREAD.... LOL--OH WELL...I will leave what I wrote anyway...

Your bird needs 10-14 hours of uninterrupted sleep. If you want to bring people home and talk etc, that could be an issue...Unless the bird has its own room and 2 cages (one for sleep and one for daytime when it will need to be in the center of activity).

If you want to cook with Teflon or use other products containing PFOA/PTFE/Fluoroplastics, that will also be a HUGE/DEADLY issue. It is hidden in MANY things that heat outside of the kitchen (curlers, blowdryers, space-heaters, microwave popcorn bags, air-poppers, rice-cookers, steamers, drip trays, roasters, self-cleaning ovens etc.

If you ever want to clean with chemicals then you cannot do this with a bird. No household cleaners are safe, and a door between the chemicals and the bird is not enough. Similarly, anything with a scent can seriously harm a bird (perfumes, candles---scented or non---, aerosols, fabreeze, air-freshener, insence, carpet cleaner, nail polish remover, paint, glue, etc etc)

The noise can be intense...are you in an apartment?

Traveling with birds is very hard, so you will have to take him with you or hire a sitter...It isn't easy to board birds due to the extreme risk of airborne illness (spread via feather dust and often, asymptomatic).

Are you prepared to keep this bird for the rest of your life (through moves, spouses, children etc?) Your bird may bite your children and future wife...
