Thinking about adopting a CAG....

I know, I know- I said I wanted to adopt an amazon, but there's a lady in my area looking for a forever home for her CAG.

Here's what I know from chit-chat via FB...
"Seven" is 15 years young, a former breeder bird who was adopted 3 years ago from a disgusting breeder, is well-behaved but doesn't like to be handled and regressed into biting after the lady's child was born. Overall, Seven is a happy and healthy girl who enjoys shredding paper, wood, and exploring. She also apparently likes to nest and lay eggs

That's all I know so far- hopefully she'll PM me, but at this point I would have to wait until our house is done before I could even think of bringing another bird home... *sigh* lol

So, what do you guys think? Should I try to pursue this and see if it's a good fit?? Or am I just an eager dreamer?? Haha

Oh My,

I would hold out for an amazon myself. Some greys do not do well in busy households and you have a galah and a toddler. Then again some do but I would really try and assess the emotional stability of this grey before commiting.

Yes- that would be a concern of mine; our house is busy, very busy! But this CAG is coming from a home that already has children (at least 2), so at this point I don't know if it's part of the problem. I wouldn't want to bring her into my home, only to cause her biting to get worse and start plucking- I'm assuming she's not a plucker at this point.

She did say Seven is perfectly happy with just hanging out and watching everything, but she's not getting the amount of attention she needs -so I'm guessing that means not very much one-on-one time.

I guess only by finding out more and maybe meeting seven will you find out.
Good Luck, I know you'll make the right choice whatever that will be!

I told her to PM me and then she stopped replying to the post  ....and I don't want to seem like a stalker and PM her lol so I guess I'll wait...in the meantime my list of questions grows longer lol

I vote CAG. We always had a busy house with our CAG and never had any problems, but like all birds no two are the same.

I think [our Congo grey ] does so well because he is in a busy household. These guys are so smart and need to be in a stimulating environment. Hes the only one of my birds I cant "Read". But its sounds like you know what you would be getting into[and I commend you] What are you looking for in a bird ?

I don't particularly have a criteria that I'm looking to meet, other than to adopt a bird in need of a forever home.

I wouldn't want to adopt her unless I know it's going to be a good fit; the lady did pop back on and asked how many birds I have, so we'll see.... Part of her criteria she listed is that she go to a "bird knowledgable" home and to someone who's home a good majority of the time to help her progress and give her the time and work she needs, so I know she has Seven's welfare as a top priority.

Have you heard back from the woman yet, Shirre? Have you met Seven?

I haven't heard anything from her- I did tell her up front that it would be a few weeks before I would be able to have the room for Seven....if it wasn't meant to be then it wasn't meant to be.

Well, she re-posted the rehoming ad- this time with pictures.... Let's just say I've asked her if I can meet her because the pictures tell 1000 words.
:(

That's a difficult choice, because both breeds are so different. If you love a bird with complexity, I'd vote for the CAG. If you love a bird that makes you laugh, then I'd go with the Amazon.

Well, I think I'm just going to "let this one go" and wait for my amazon....too bad I can't save them all  :(

I don't know how I totally missed this thread, Shirre, I'm sorry. :(

I think as hard as this decision must have been, it's a good one. :) Please don't let your head hang. I KNOW there is a green bird in your not so distant future. ;) HUGS to you!!!

If your gut is telling you to pass, then do it... I know that feeling of wanting to save everyone that happens across your path... being a dreamer like you, wanting all birds to be as happy, loved and spoiled as the birds that live with us. But, follow your instinct, if passing on this bird is what that little voice is telling you, listen...

Never know tomorrow, the perfect Amazon might pop up and your little voice will give you the 'told ya so'... :) always reasons!!!

I just needed someone to talk sense into me

Jen- you're totally right, being a dreamer I just want all the unfortunate fids out there to be just as loved, spoiled, and happy as MY babies. But right now I don't have the space to do that...soon! Soon I will though!! HAHAHAHHAA *evil grin*

I know you will adopt/rescue the PERFECT bird(s) for you when the time is right. And I think there is more than 1 addition in your future. :)
