Blue & Gold Macaw, African Grey, Sun Conure, & Umbrella Cockatoo
We have purchased a male B&G and we are thinking about getting its sibling, (not sure of the sex). We currently have a sun conure, african grey, & unbrella cockatoo. I would not be keeping both macaws in the same cage, my fear being them bonding and getting aggressive. For those of you who have or have experience owning multiple macaws, can you give me any advice or if doing this is a good idea. I know two macaws equals twice as much everything, I'm just concerned with taking on two at once. Thanks in advance for your time.

Taking two on at once isn't impossible as long as you spend equal time with both of them to get them used to you. The starting point is very very important time of their life to learn and understand. Never allow siblings to mate if it's a male and a female, just want to add that in. Being separate sex doesn't mean that they will get along. We've had Willie for 10 years before adding a second Macaw, she came cause she needed someone who can train and handle her. So I took her in and loved her ever since, her name is Lola. They do not like each other nor try to get along what so ever so I handle them separately.

One thing you have to look into is get a air purifier if you don't have one already, a lot of Macaws are allergic to powder dust created by Cockatoos, African Greys, and Cockatiels.

We do have an air purifier but not currently for the dust reason. Both birds are being weaned now so we do not have the male we purchased at home yet. We should be bringing him home in two weeks at the latest. Both birds get along great on the perch together now so I at least have that peace of mind.

Then having both of them wouldn't be too bad. It is always best to train one on one, but sometimes monkey see monkey do, they do follow suit....Please do post their pictures when you get them home and please do post your flock as well, we love pictures here!!! :D

For some reason my chores didn't double when I added Ripley to the flock....they quadrupled. :54:

Mine aren't housed in the same cage, but next to each other, and they spend time together on 2 combined huge Java trees. I am VERY lucky that they get along quite well. There is the occasional tail yanking, but nothing more than that. Both of mine are males. They do get quite jealous when I spend one on one time with the other, so I spend quality time in a room where the other doesn't see me, otherwise it's guaranteed to get quite loud. :D

When you say, "they quadrupled":53:, what exactly to you mean? Just courious. At this moment I am leaning pretty hard towards just getting the one male but deep down I would like to get both. Thanks

Wendy's birds are avid wood chewers so they make one heck of a mess, she's posted videos of it before and my god do they make a mess. Willie used to do the same before but he's better now....
