I'm putting this here since it starts with a macaw.
We have a newspaper fairy. Every two weeks or so, a couple bags of newspaper appear on my front porch. It's awesome. I'm pretty sure I know where it's coming from, but I'm not sure, as I've yet to catch the fairy.
When I first got Charlotte it quickly became obvious just how fast I'd be going through newspaper. Between changing her cage every day and protecting the floor under her play perches, the amount was astounding. We don't receive the paper anymore, and our stash was dwindling quickly. We only replace our stash when we go to MrC's mother's house and bring back what's in her recycling bin there, but that's not nearly enough to keep up with all the birds now that we have Charlotte.
So I posted on my local "Nextdoor" site, asking if anybody had any old newspapers they were willing to give me. I figured if I got a big enough stash that I would have enough to get through to when I could get to MIL's house again, and ask her if she'd be willing to just not put her newspapers in regular recycling and we'd take them all with us when we went there every other month or so. A few people responded and that was awesome. I got a stash that would last at least 3 weeks. Yay! I was super happy. My MIL said she'd happily save her papers in a separate place for us. Double yay! Now I don't have to order a paper just to have bird care stuff.
But then something weird happened. A couple weeks later, two grocery bags of papers appeared on my front porch. Then it happened a couple weeks after that. and again after that. Pretty much every two weeks on the dot, 2-3 bags of newspaper appear on my front porch. I have a newspaper fairy!
I just think it's pretty cool. A lot of people responded initially because, I think, the idea of helping somebody rescue an animal in bad shape makes them feel good, and giving that person essentially your trash is a pretty cheap and easy way to do it. My newspaper fairy has to be one of the half dozen or so people who delivered to me (I offered to pick stuff up, but some people preferred to deliver it to me). I think it's amazing that at least one person is committed to helping me out long term. It's not a huge expense, but every little bit helps. My newspaper fairy has no idea how happy he or she makes me.
