Dusty: Dusky Conure
So, Dusty was just having a fit....He was throwing his food all over and screaming... I took his food dish out of his cage, he screamed louder, i covered his cage which normally quiets him down and this time that didnt work...

My sister went and put a CD into our stereo and immediately Dusty stopped screaming. I uncovered his cage and put his dish back. He is currently chatting as he eats his food.

ahh the magic of music!

I Love Dusty to Death but does have quite a mouth on him and when I am trying to study for a very important test he gets on my last nerve.

Typical birds, know how to throw a tantrum.
Whenever my AG Mishka goes cuckoo, we play her a cd
"Baa Baa Black Sheep"
It always calms her down, and better still she is singing the first line.
Pavarotti has been reincarnated in a parrot LoL
Guess there is a method in our madness.
Great day

Lately He's been throwing the worst tantrums. He is a smart bird and I'm almost positive that he knows I'm leaving for school again soon. Unfortunately I have to leave him home with my parents. Its the downside of living in the dorms. When he starts his fits when I'm not home, my mom puts me on speaker phone and I talk calmly to him and that generally calms him down for a few days.

I would do anything to bring him with me...but I've gone through all my options...

I feel for you honestly, being parted from your bird.
May I make a suggestion
Make a recording for Dusty, you talking, saying words you have taught him.
When you are away let your mom play the cd for Dusty.
I have made Mishka 12 cd's to date.
All the words she has learnt, sentences etc.
When I go out we always leave one playing for her.
Even when at home, a cd is always playing.
We rec ordered her, when I went out.
She says all the words, answers questions I have reordered, makes animal sounds etc.
It keeps her occupied, teaches her at the same time and she never gets bored or lonely.
I honestly think it's worth trying.
Good luck at school.
Take care

Glad you going to try.
At least when you are away, he will still hear your voice.
Sure it's going to make a big difference.
Bye for now

Alcatraz likes music too, but most of the time it excites him. He'll sway from side to side or start pacing on his perch.

I've started playing "Goodnight Sweetheart (It's Time to Go)" before I put him to bed everynight. So maybe that will help associate music with quiet time.

Sweety my jenday loves music. He likes a lot of differant kinds too.Rock or pop to play, new age, atmospheric or ambient to relax or prepare to sleep.(He really likes Loreena McKennit's music and celtic stuff)
And for whatever reason when we play the rock group 'tool' he thinks its playtime!(he loves Tool for whatever reason-they played a song by them on the rock station we have on occasionally,So he goes up and plays with his toys and dances.I said to GL,is that bird jamming to tool? she said I think so.EVERY time the song comes on he goes and plays. So I guess sweety likes tool? Why? I dunno-Strange bird.)

I worry that while I'm away at work, that the macaws get too loud. They can see all of the wildlife that roam around the property behind our house and they start screaming sometimes. I started leaving on the soft rock station on tv and my neighbors say they don't hear them screaming anymore. :green1:
