The Blocker is here! The Blocker is here!
She arrived in her protective cage and has not yet ventured out.
She is ratty,anti social, loud, aggressive, and unhappy. The Professor has tried to go near, but is getting chased away.
Blocker is a female Galah and is said to play peek o boo, wave, dance to music, say oh yeah? and hello and what are you doing?
At the moment she is sitting quietly, taking us all in. She is preening, but not yet eating. Her mum has just left and I think I noticed a tear in her eye as she departed.
I will take pix when she is out of her cage. I dont rate cage shots very highly.
She is going to be a delightful addition to our flock.
She has not taken to any of us at all. She will allow us to pat her through the bars,but is biting when you get too familiar.

Cool Red, give her a few days to acclimate to the new surroundings ... especially your "free-range" bird keeping ... she may have security issues so don't take away her "safe space" initially ... She'll be playing with the professor in no time.

Should I put my order in for a baby Galah now, or are you not taking orders yet?

I am happy she is home! You sound excited. Hope all progresses smoothly.
Knowing how the professor is so attached to you I hope there are no problems between the two.
I hope you and The Professor are ready for a female in the house.

She is waving to him through the cage.
He is checking her out and she is now sitting quietly while he does.
Last night he put on a wonderful display for her.
Pranced around her cage and said all the words he thinks he knows.
Waved his arms about and made some noises I haven't heard before.
They are both less panicked this morning.
He is just finding excuses to walk past her cage.

I do want to change her name, but she answers to it.
I also think its a bit of an insult to the memory of her former owner.
I put her on the back lawn in her cage to take some pix. Of course the Professor stuck his beak in, but I nearly dies with my leg in the air when I saw the Skippah, get off his perch inside, walk alone, thru the house, out the back door across the lawn, to sit with me!!!???? The new bird must be ruffling feathers for Mr "Up my self" to get off his perch for ANYONE!

Today I just opened the cage door and ignored her. She came out after about 2 minutes and went and sat under the dining room table for 4 hours. I got a stick and herded her outside. I chased her about till she got on the stick and then I set her down outside on a perch I made a while ago. I left her out there for another 4 hours, talking to her as I passed and made coffee near the kitchen window. It is very windy and stormy outside. We are enjoying the fruits of ex cyclone Pancho. I left her out there under the veranda with Skippah and the Professor wandering about. I was tempted to bring her inside but as they were sheltered I kept reminding myself that they are wild birds and living in luxury. She sat on that perch Till I brought her in. I put her near her cage and she got in and went to the back of the cage where its darker (The cover was on the back of the cage). My main worry is she has no desire to join us, even when given hours to come out. He keeps making overtures
that she rebuffs, and she has no love for me at all. She still never seems happy. She is always scared or angry. She is showing less panic, but that not is being replaced by anything positive. I had assumed as she panicked less, she would enjoy us more, but that is not yet the case.

Glad to see you back here Red.
I think that the Blocker just needs some more time to accept her situation.
You are doing all the right things just perservere a while longer.
Unless she is getting visibly worse. Is she?

Today I took off her cage cover and she left her cage and moved under the dining room table after about 60 seconds. I let her sit there quietly for an hour then I herded her outside with the stick. I cornered her and she stepped onto the stick and I put her on this perch.

I have put the other 2 out with her and shut the door and come inside. Its quite nippy outside (for Oz) but its still, and the sun is out. So they can sit outside and entertain each other for a while. She still hates me.

She is not able to get on or off that perch yet. She wont explore and sits where ever I put her. She has sat out there for about a hour and seems quite peaceful if not as sad as ever.

Today is Sunday. She spent the entire day in the sun in her upturned cage. She made no attempt to do anything. She shared some of my coffee this Morning and that is a new thing.

If for no other reason, at least for the fact that ANY name is better than referring to a feathered friend as "the creature."

I am told she likes tea rather than coffee.
She got out of her cage instantly when I opened it up inside the house.
Today she spent till 2.30pm under the kitchen table.
I couldn't take it any more, so I herded her outside with the Professor. He is staking out the back door to either sneak or rush through the back door when its opened. Debbie wants him outside more as he is a destructive messy bird.
He has been out roaming in the yard all day and is now hanging around waiting to sneak in. She is happy enough. Looking for food and somewhere to hide.
Sunny day here so I am happy to ignore them for a while. The Skippah has taken to leaving his perch and following her around the yard. It freaks her out, and runs off to hide when comes down from on high.

This is probably as good as it gets for now. She didn't get up there her self, but she did sit up there with Deb for 3 hours till she went to bed.
I have asked the people who know the owner to drop her old perch off. I think she can sit up on a perch and get used to people rather than hide under furniture.
I think she will be like Skippah, Enjoying the world going by and not being patted by every man and his dog. I can live with that.

An interesting development today.
I decided to do with out the stick as it stresses her so much. I thought I could use my fore arm and have her step up on it. Sadly she panicked 2 or 3 times in a row she leapt from my arm and landed heavily. I continued on and her mood changed to very nasty. Her tone changed and she started drawing blood from the back of my hand. There must of been something she said in Galah that the Prof. didn't like, coz he raced past me and started attacking her, wings out and pecking her. She fought back and he backed off a little and again she got aggressive with us. The Professor got brave and chested up to her. both of them were being very aggressive with each other. I was trying to break it up when who should wade in from the other side of the house?
In comes the Skippah,... separates them and believe it or not, takes over from Prof. and starts telling her off. She is stuck in the corner and he is Wings out screaming at her. She wouldn't cower and pushed back till she could get out of the corner, and then she saw the chance the she took it. She ran out onto the back lawn with both of them chasing her, talking to her as they went.
They wandered back and patrolled the fence line, and would not let her come back to the house. After an hour I caged them both and herded her back to the back of the house on a perch and let them back out. It has been peaceful since.

Sounds like you have a feathered police force there. The fact that its been peaceful since the incident is good. Animals are much better than humans at dishing out stern punishments without holding a grudge. Seems they thought she got out of line, and they were putting her back in line.

Should be interesting to see how the next few days go, let us know.

I find it interesting that it was Skippah that came out of nowhere to help out ... this little exchange can tell you a lot about your flock dynamics ... Blocker is low woman on the totem pole, and Skippah is the leader and enforcer ... I would be very interested in seeing how this plays out over the next few days ... these guys should be able to work things out, but be careful not to alienate Blocker in the process ... Skip and Prof have to learn that she is now part of the flock too ...

well, its been a Red letter day here .
Blockers previous owner Kris came to visit and check up on me.

She played with Kris for nearly 3 hours. She was well behaved for the most part, a little bitey and a little scared. But over all was very happy to see Kris and spend touchy time with her. It gave the rest of us confidence that more can be achieved with Blocker now I have seen the gentle side of her. She is still anti men and talks to strangers when they arrive, but not me, not yet. Kris handled her tantrums well and always seemed in charge. The Professor kept the boys busy and was a s charming as usual. The Budgies played their part and The Skippah just wanted everyone to go away.
I learned a lot today and am re thinking how far we can bring her towards a happy life.
