The Best Filters for Red-Eared Sliders & Other Turtles

Hi Frank, speaking of water turtles... I was wondering, do all aquatic turtles ALWAYS carry Salmonella as part of their 'normal bacteria'? Or, is it that only SOME of them are carriers?

I always see this warning regarding reptiles and always on water turtle tanks and was wondering this. Thanks.

I kind of wonder if the salmonella has more to do with what they eat opposed to where they live. I'm personally looking into a blue tongued skink, and the guy I was talking to was telling me about a this one gecko that you don't have to worry about salmonella with because of his diet, or worry about UVA/UVB with them either... and this guy has a crazy amount of reptiles ! I think he has 52 animals in total, 6 of which are cockatiels and one of those happens to be blind - the poor bird. He's a sucker for taking care of things and a herp-obsessed man :)

But that'd be nice to know, so I anticipate your answer as much as Julie does right now :p

Hi,

As far as we know, all reptiles and amphibians do carry one type or another...may be exceptions, but this is the guideline followed by vets, zoos and the CDC. Please see this article and the CDC guidelines linked there for further info, and let me know if you have any ques, best, Frank
