"Fly free, little ones. Love and miss you."
That moment of dread when you come home and realize that you forgot to close the cage door of the wildest, boldest, most destructive bird I've ever adopted. That was my experience yesterday evening when I got home and found my kitchen thrashed. Tootsie and Rosco were squawking up a storm but Sidney was strangely silent. That should have been my first clue.
At first, I thought that someone had broken in. That is, until I saw multiple piles of poo on the counters and floor. For some reason this week, I've been really lazy about organization in the kitchen. I had a lot of loose articles laying about. Most of which ended up on the floor including the pile of forks I had sitting on the counter after I spilled some juice in the drawer that morning. Paper items were shredded. Couple of nips out of the cabinets. And just outside the kitchen, the bag of peanut pieces that I feed the outside birds had been torn open and peanuts scattered all over.
So I walked into the living room. Door open, no bird in the cage. I called for Sidney. Not a peep. A little bit of alarm set in and I started looking about. Well, poo on the laptop and the end table so he was there too. Then I saw him sitting on the base of the bird stand by the living room window, just about hidden from sight by the branch. I walked up to him and said something about how much fun he must have had that day. The little brat's response? His "pbbbbbbbt" fart noise that he only does when he knows he is in trouble. I picked him up and found he was stuffed to the top of his head with peanuts. I swear his crop was sticking out farther than his beak and he definitely felt heavier.
I could not be mad with him. Irritated with myself for being so empty headed to walk out the door and not do the usual double check to make sure everyone is safe and secure. But all is well though I'm sure that I'm going to find more stuff he got into when I clean house this weekend. He did get one thing that caused me some irritation. The little USB receiver for the mouse I use with my laptop was pulled out and is gone. I have absolutely no idea what he did with it. I searched for a half hour but not a sign of it. Fortunately, I remembered that I had a spare that could be programmed to work with the mouse. But it was a pain to navigate without the mouse to get to the setup app. Wonder how long it will take me to find the original and how badly it is going to be damaged when I do.
I hope this little event caused Sid to swear off the peanuts, though. I heard him grunt after I got him out today and he had his morning poo. A lot thicker than normal. But he seems happy and active as he usually is. Peanuts too shall 'pass'...eventually....
