Tests for adoption Noble macaw

I have been talking to our Avian vet about what tests to have done after we get Julio back home. Julio is a 8 year old Noble macaw who is plucked.

In an email from her I have the following recommendation for tests. Since this is the first adoption parrot I am taking in my home are there any other tests or procedures I should be having done to Julio.

-+/- Polyoma:
-CBC, profile, BAs:
-Fecal:

I took the dollar amounts off because that was for my information so I can budget for the tests.

I just want to make sure I have all the bases covered and do not miss anything since I have only brought home babies.

That looks great! So glad that I don't see Abv on there that is the only test I can shoot down in a heartbeat lol. Everything is covered as to what I have always done

Thanks for your inputs. I just thought the list was looking a little short but realize the disease testing was what I though was looking a little lean. We had the PDD/Abv test discussion and Dr. Blair believes it is unreliable test. It is the PDD that scares me the most since it is all over up here where I am at. One of our rescues is pretty much out of commission because they had a severe outbreak of PDD. They do not accept or adopt out birds anymore but still have their website with no changes to it. *sigh* frankly I am not comfortable adopting local anymore. I am sure the other two rescues here are just fine but color me paranoid.

I have a pretty intense quarantine planed. The only thing I will be missing is the hair and bootie covers. I have everything else covered. I am sealing off the air vent in the room and putting in air purifier due to the airless flow in there plus it is my office and I don't wanna die in there. LOL. Poor Julio will be isolated but he will have my company during the day and Lupe's company in the evenings.

Gosh, I didn't realize it was PDD that hit that rescue. I've always wondered how a rescue can protect against PDD since the tests are so controversial.

Soda you can't, I mean truly you can't protect your flock from PDD, wild geese carry it now... Plus a bird can carry it for years and then one day shed or die from it.. Currently it is to unpredictable and hard to pick up on early to treat it. The test are just a load currently they don't do anything for anything it is just a guessing game ATM, there is some new tests coming out that will be great!

Noble I would worry about the rescue as longas the birds arnt dieing anymore PDD cells cannot live outside the body for over 30minutes, this is proven. My mini macaw Ollie died of PDD and he had this disease for years the necropsy showed and one day it took him without any symptoms... He had it for over 3 years long befor he came to my house, he came to my house and passed away... None of my other birds ever got it he was bonded t a blue crowned conure and she never got it, matter r fact she still lives with me everyday, she misses Ollie a lot though. So the fact that it didn't even spread to one of my birds just shows how hard it truly is to spread PDD, as well how truly unreliable most sources of information are on the topic.

Jtbirds, thanks so much for the post. Hopefully, I am going to adopt a scarlet that was rescued from a hoarder. One of the 16 birds may have PDD and may have to be put to sleep. It is so good to hear that the other birds may not have it. The vet said none of the other birds tested positive for it, but after reading your post, that makes sense.

I guess that it also make sense that they are just not going to put down this blue and gold until they see signs of organ failure, as you have stated, there is no real test to show the disease.

It is sure hard to read about sick birds. It just makes you feel so helpless and sad.

Noble i met someone with a noble macaw yesterday, I was kind of surprised i asked him are you sure its not a hahns or a hybrid between the to? and he said nope he got it from a breeder and it was 100% noble. He said it is one of his favorite birds besides he plays very hard lol! i told him he is still a macaw even though he is mini. Just glad to hear of another noble around and that this lovely couple has one.
