Maddie [Military Macaw]
Hi there~!

I got a military macaw on march 18th and.. I think she might be territorial of her cage? Or just really, really, really attached to it? I don't know if macaws get that way, but..

In the morning, she steps up onto my arm and I pull her out of her cage and we play. Everything is fine, I can take her outside or let her sit on the window sill or she'll get up on my arm and dance.. until, if I need to get something done around the house, I let her get up to play on her cage - and she'll refuse to come down again.

She doesn't bite, but she repeatedly backs away from me until I turn my back on her and walk away. (lather, rinse, repeat until she finally steps up..)

Is there anything I can or should do, different than I already am?

Another thing she does (and she only does this to my uncle, not me) is scream when my uncle is on the phone. She only does this when I'm not in the house, so.. what can I tell my uncle to do?

Thanks in advance~ :)

Hi my macaw lives top of his cage. He thinks it's game when I want him come down. He also hates my mobile try's to get it everytime he sees it

Hi, I just got a new Harlequin macaw last month. She is 9 months old and is only nippy if anyone gets near her cage. I have read that this is normal behavior for macaws because in the wild they would be defending their territory. I have noticed that other macaws that I have handled over the last month before deciding on our baby would try to bite if anyone got near the cage but once they were out of the cage they would calm down and be nicer. Our new bird is really sweet once we get her out but likes to bluff aggression while in and around her cage. We have to open the cage door and walk away and let her come out on her own because she does not like anyone putting their hands in her cage.

Maybe your uncle needs to go into another room and shut the door to talk on the phone and also tell the person on the other end of the line what the noise is. Lesley

My Macaw does the same thing when we're talking on the phone. He hates it!!!! LoL
I just find it funny. Usually we leave the phone while on the phone cause there's no way you can talk on the phone with him in the same room.

You just got him pretty much, just give it time....You can't push him to do everything you want right away, it takes time!!!!

I had the experience handling birds before my macaw came along so everything went pretty smoothly with him. He gets excited to see me, he flew 3 times in the 7 years I've had him, all 3 times he flew towards me....Anyone else gets too close he will attack...
