So after taking a couple of weeks to settle in(It hasn't been that long since moving to my dad's, but I've probably had him around 3~ weeks.) he still has yet to touch ANY of the toys I put in his cage. I put everything from rope/wood/hard plastic/java, to pinata type toys for shredding, and he doesn't even LOOK at them!
However, today, he decided to come out of the cage and hop onto the floor and chase around a TENNIS BALL... Maybe he sees Arya(dog, shepherd/spaniel/mutt mix) playing with them, because ever since she was a pup she's been OBSESSED with tennis balls. He didn't seem like he wanted to chew on it, just roll it around.
And trust me, I was keeping an eye on him, if he tried to chew on it I'd have taken it up immediately. But it's the FIRST time he's taken any kind of interest in a toy, so much that he LEFT HIS CAGE! That was also a first since moving!
Point is, I'd love to make toys out of tennis balls(normal sized or mini, whichever.) I know there's some stainless steel toys that can be loaded with tennis balls for larger parrots like macs, but has anyone made toys themselves out of tennis balls? Maybe hollowed them out and used them for foraging?
Also, should he decide to chew on it, is it going to be harmful in any way? Of course I'd be purchasing them from a pet store, since I'd like to assume that if they're made for dogs they're made with non-toxic materials, but I know birds are much more sensitive, so that's why I'm asking.
Even if it's just like a shelf inside the cage with raised edges, so he can roll it around without it going to the bottom of the cage(unless he picks it up and drops it, of course.)
As much as I'm somewhat saddened by the fact that he's ignoring the toys I so carefully picked and ordered for him, those can be recycled to my conures or saved for later if he decides he likes them. I just would like to give him something he would enjoy inside the cage.. since all he does is sit on his perch and mumble to the house guests, unless he's eating/preening/sleeping.
Thanks ahead of time!
