My landlord recently asked me to put my birds in the basement because they bug my neighbours with their daily chatter (old house, big vents, not much sound proofing between units). My neighbours have been very kind and they don't complain much and are very understanding, and my landlord was very kind about it, and since my basement is finished and well-lit, I thought it was a reasonable solution.
They would still be upstairs with me when I'm home, and overnight (I have two big cages).
I have a dehumidifier and an air purifier in the basement and will probably add a fan for air movement (it can get musty without the dehumidifier) but the air conditioner I have is just a window unit upstairs. Because of the size and direction of the basement window, it still does get pretty warm down there. On a typical hot summer day, it peaks at around 28C / 82F. From what I have read, this is acceptable for birds, and if there's a brutal heat wave, I can keep them upstairs for a few days if I need to. With the humidifier running constantly, it's about 35-45% (depending on which gauge you use).
The basement is cooler in the winter, but I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get there and either find some of safe-as-possible electric heater (like one of those little electric fireplaces), or see if they acclimate (preferable) - it can drop as low as 60F / 16C, but overnights they would still be upstairs where it's 20C / 68F. And again - if it's bitterly cold for a week, they can come upstairs.
Does this all seem okay? I think it's within the acceptable temp ranges, but want to make triple sure.
