I'm looking at adopting a Dusky Conure and was wondering what you all could tell me about them. What makes them stand out from other conures? Are they friendly? I'm just looking for experiences and opinions please. I would really appreciate it.
I have a green cheek, and don't really know much about duskys. I think they are kind of similar to green cheeks, but not sure? Auggie's dad has a dusky conure, and would be the best person to ask.
I'd be happy to answer any questions - but I'm not sure what to add to what I put on the other thread. We have a handful of other dusky owners, perhaps they will chime in as they see this.
I'm not really sure what to ask specifically, but like I said..Just what makes them stand out from other conures, I suppose generally specific behaviores? I'm reading about how they are actually quite loud and can get possesive. My GCC is very vocal, but I don't consider him that loud, if I have my windows open I can hear him outside the house...Anyways, I decided to adopt for sure and I will pick her up in a week. She is kept alone in a room so I figure that her quarantine time won't be sooo horrible since she is already used to being a bit isolated. Driving two hours away to pick her up, what do some of you do to travel well with your birds?
Congrats on the decision to give her a home! We look forward to seeing pictures of her! As for travel, the breeder I got River from is also two hours away from me. I used a "cat carrier" lined with a towel. I put a blanket over most of it, thinking he might feel more secure that way, but it turned out he liked it best when I left the blanket off the front enough so he could peek out to watch me.
Yes, I use a plastic cat carrrier lined with newspaper & then a small towel.
I only cover it if it is in winter & cold out.
I face the opening toward me on the seat & seat buckle it in so it can't go flying if I have to slam on the brakes for anything.
My Dusky isn't all that loud. She is loud when I wake her up in the morning and change food and water. She's also loud in the middle of the afternoon. Like extremely loud to the point where I close the door on the room and walk away. I guess she just likes to test her voice in the afternoon. Its like clockwork when she starts screaming. She likes to talk to herself and whistle to her toys. When I come home from work at night I hear her talking and whistling to her bell toy. It's not very loud but it puts a smile on my face because she sounds so goofy. She isn't very good with other birds. I'm afraid to let her near my parakeets. She is kind of aggressive toward my Sun Conure but can also be indifferent toward him.
She's an extreme love bug and enjoys cuddling and spending time with me. She is such a one person bird. I adopted her and never expected her to ever really take to me how she did. She doesn't care for anybody but me. She doesn't even like my boyfriend all that much and he's around her as much as I am.
Bottom line, I LOVE my Dusky. I absolutely adore her! Words cannot describe how much love this little bird. She is my favorite out of my group. I like the way she looks, I love her colors, I love her temperament, and I love her size. She is the perfect size. Smaller than a sun but bigger than a gcc. She's not nearly as loud as my sun and I love her for that :X Dusky Conures are my favorite.
I guess it all depends on the bird you're adopting. I got lucky with my little girl. I love Kayak with all my heart and I hope if you adopt this Dusky yours ends up as sweet as my Kayak.
Thank you everybody always looks at me like something is wrong with me for calling her that. She came with the name Kaya. She never responded to it so I added a K out of frustration one day and started calling her 'Kayak'. She listens and responds to me now when call I call her. I guess she didn't like her old name.
