I am freaking out right now. My daughter made bacon in a skillet with teflon, I thought I had thrown them all away. My conures are in another room with the door closed, do you think they will be ok?How soon woukd they show symptoms?

I think they will be fine since they are in another room with the door closed .
I would open the window and air the house out really well.
And then throw that pan out ...lol

From the stories I have read, I believe the symptoms would be almost immediate.

We throw out all Teflon too and go heavy duty stuff lol. He should be fine. I have had my boss cook with teflon around my bird and even paint. My landlord put on a self cleaning oven without telling me for the first 5 minutes. When these accidents arise I simply immediately take the bird right outside for fresh air. I advise you to do the same. Just because they survive the first few minutes with any of this on, doesnt mean they are immune to it.

Sorry to throw another question out there but since its a teflon thread. I'm back home at the moment so I have no control over whether teflon gets used or not. But I've read that teflon is only dangerous when the pans are overheated or scratched (only way they release fumes) has anyone heard the same thing?

I use teflon pans all the time and Roxy is practically in the same room as the kitchen. It does not affect your birds unless your BURN the teflon pans. You just have to be careful.

Yes, I have also heard that it will not be a problem unless you overheat Teflon.

My interpretation is this: You can use crack as much as you want as long as you don't O.D., because then you will be dead. It's a little extreme, yes!! I would not want to be the one to tell someone that it's OK as long as you don't overheat it or scratch it and then they go home and screw up and their bird dies!

Here you go guys.

So you have too get to 536 degrees to cause damage.

fahrenheit hurts my brain

Just cook on the lowest heat setting practical

It's not worth the risk to me. I'd much rather spend an extra $20 on a stainless steel or a cast iron pan and know my bird is safe.

IT's not worth the risk. As soon as Teflon is heated toxic chemicals are released.

Finding out about teflon after getting Aizen, I was rather gutted that we needed to ditch just about every pot and pan we owned. An expensive month, washing up is now much more effort, but... I didn't want to take the chance.

Thankfully, stainless steel sets were on offer that weekend.

We got rid of all our teflon cookware when we brought Lucy home. We still had some scented candles around as well. I told my girlfriend to remove them from the main room and put them in the closet. We know that you can't burn the candles, but you can't control other people who may not know better (or people that are just dumb and must mess with stuff in your place)

Call me paranoid, I call it precaution. You can't light candles if they aren't visible.

And if you have a laser printer, or ever want to get one, there is Teflon used in its fuser mechanism as well. And the job of the fuser is to heat up the toner (finely ground plastic) in order to melt it.

Let's just say that a laser printer is pretty much going to be a death sentence for a parrot...

Good to know thanks for this tip!

My mom only has teflon pans, whenever she cooks i just take my bird to another room till she is done and the room is COMPLETELY aired out:) then i bring her back in i've had her for a year now with no problems.

I use the Enviro Friendly/Green baccarat range which is made of ceramic and is PFOA and PTFE free. :)

It's a good idea to check with the manufacturer if their products are free of PFOA/PTFE - and keep a record of the conversation; either record it or keep the email! You never know if they decide to go back on their word if they are lying.
