Hello,
I have a female parakeet I have had for a few months now and have gotten her to come out with food/Step up with food, but it dosent seem she's learning much. She will only do this with food. What should I do? :whiteblue:

Thanks for the recommendation. What do you think I should give as a treat, other than millet maybe? She won't eat anything other that small seeds (her food) or millet, which I use as an every day food item. I've tried fruits, veggies, papaya, she won't eat it.. any suggestions?

I feed Harrison's Pellets, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff. My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic.

You might experiment by offering her different small things, like a broken off piece of pine nut or almond, or a piece of a sunflower seed. It might take her a few tries to really taste and decide if she likes something. Then, the more training you do, the better the bond.

Ok thanks! Any other suggestions of good training treats/fruits and veggies?

Ok thanks! Any other suggestions of good training treats/fruits and veggies?

I have heard, and seen, video's of little budgies and 'tiels just going to town on little pieces of broccoli and cauliflower heads and little pieces of pineapple.

He/she is not too tame with you right? Well work on that slowly and when he/she feels comfy with you,try eating with them. They are flock birds and like to nosh with other family members.

I have found that my little 'tiel,BB,does NOT want to eat alone! BUT..if I am sitting here at my computer, and have my lunch/dinner on the desk,he has no problems with jumping off my arm and running to my plate,to help himself with MY grub! He'll just taste bits..a beaky of this and that. I have found he has a thing for smashed 'tatoes with pieces of corn nibs mixed in,and a splash of gravy .. ok...maybe not the BEST thing to eat,but then he at least trys other things too...but if I put it in his food bowl in his house,he generally ignores it...he'd rather dine with ME lol..then he gets to run threw the smashed 'tatoes and gravy, then run like heck to get up to my shoulder before I can stop the little bugger :rolleyes::p;)

Ok thanks all. Just one more question though, how do I get her to get onto my finger without the food showing? She'll do it if she sees the food but not if she dosent. (I have a clicker) (Not used)
