Hello,

Well my eclectus Jack is now about 5 months old. Things are going really well. But would like to ask something , if this is normal ???....
I talk to Jack non stop, hoping he will eventually start talking. We did manage at one point getting him to say Hello a few times but nothing more came of it.
Now what we have found is , we could be in another room and we can hear Jack talking, not parrot chatter, actually talking. We have also seen him from a separate room, where he can also see us , but he thinks we arent taking any notice of him, chatting away and having a great time. But as soon as we respond with Hello jack or he notices us coming toward him, he changes back to his little squawks in response to us. Why is he hiding that he can say a few words ? is it normal ?? Will he eventually come out with what he is saying ?
He has also spoken whilst we are in the same room and paying him no attention at all, but softly. I hid around a corner and listened to him and slowly popped out and said " Gotchya ! " but all I got back was little sqawks hahahha , this baby of mine is sending me round the bend playing hide and seek hahahahah

I know plenty of people I don't like talking to! :)

Sorry, don't know that I have much advise here except to keep rewarding his talking - perhaps even to the point of ignoring his other sounds: if he wants attention or to come out of the cage he has to say something.

My 1 year old red sided just started to talk infront of us... we used to call her a closet talker lol She would always talk up a storm and then as soon as you looked at her she'd stop! But now that shes getting a little older she talks a lot more infront of people, and is starting to mimic us while we stand there & talk to her. From what I hear its pretty normal though.

Thanks ,

It is funny listening to him talk especially when he thinks he is doing it in secret haha

Your bird is calling for you! He is a shy talker which means that he talks when he misses you or wants you to come back. That's why when you respond to him he stops talking. My advice to you is that you reward him with treats for talking good. Good luck!!
