Do you guys take the breeder band off when you get a bird? I set up an appointment to have my birds band taken off. He got it caught in the bars. It was not that bad. I saw it and fixed it before it was a problem. The bird did not seem to mind it but I was freaked out at a bit.

If he already caught it in the bars, I think it's a good idea to have the vet remove it. The bands we have had removed we keep in a drawer just in case we need the info from it.

Removal is generally a good idea, so much potential for accidental injury!

I hate bring birds to the vets it is so scary for them. I am afraid he will hate it and be mad at me. I wish they would do a house call. I am stressing about taking my baby to the vets..... all they are going to do is take the band off. They don't even do dna test there.

If the band is causing problems it is best to remove it. Peter Pan (Quaker) has a split band which I really dont know why the breeder put on her instead of the closed band which is usually put on a hatchling but as it has never given her any bother I never thought about having it removed. Mr Biggles (WFA) has a closed band that isnt causing any problems and Elsa (Budgie) has no band on her leg at all but my Conure Roger who has now gone to Rainbow Bridge had a split band on his leg that was starting to give him bother so my AV took it off...if the band is causing bother of any kind then its always safest and best to remove it and a visit to the AV would be a lot less stressful than an accident where the band got caught in the bars and you werent there to release it . Id go to the vet and have it removed if it was me.

Aside from identifying the breeder, location, and the bird - the bands serve no purpose. So if you already have all the breeder information and you have steps in place to prevent your bird from getting loose outside, you've no need for the band.
