I've had my 13 year old Coco for just over a week now. I can't touch her yet but she is settling in very well. My question is how can I stop her from swearing. She does this quite a lot. I ignore these words and keep repeating nice words, do you think she will soon stop?

She may always remember those words, but they can be discouraged. You're doing well by ignoring, and substituting different words. Fred uses to yell at himself a lot. When he started, I would sing. It distracted him, and he usually stopped. It took some time, but he hardly ever yells at himself now....

As said you are doing the right thing. Have everyone hearing the swear words to ignore them. Eventually when she sees no people reactions the words may go away. I have read that parrots always remember their words but may not say them.

Thankyou so much for your advice. She is a very sweet bird that has been sworn at a lot. I hope she learns to trust me soon. My 9 year old son keeps asking why she is saying bad words. Let's hope he doesn't start to copy her. I can't believe why anyone would teach a parrot to swear.

Perhaps try changing what it sounds like
I was playing with my son Steven on day, and punched him on the arm and said,
Steven you b....rd
Mishka caught on the word and immediately started saying Stevie is a b....rd
I started saying Stevie is a BAD BOY, within a week, he stopped saying it, and thank goodness never again.
Guess it depends on what the word is that he is saying ........
A friend of mine's bird used to say the F word. We had an advert on TV, where a little girl says what the freekadaal. After repeating the word to the bird many times, he started saying what the freekadaal.........
Good luck

As far as why someone would teach a bird to swear... in households that consist of only adults who are rather insensitive to swear words, a bird that swears can be very entertaining. I had a Mitred Conure, Ollie, who picked up "F___ It!" shortly after we got him. It was hysterical, especially since he would say it when it seemed completely appropriate.

That being said, I don't necessarily condone teaching swearing to birds, since there will always come a time when that swear word will come out when it's NOT appropriate, like around children or rather conservative family members or friends that may find it "not funny".

I miss my Ollie! He was prone to very deep sleep... to the point of falling off his perch sometimes. After several years in my care, he fell off his perch backwards one night and broke his neck on his water dish. He died in my hands a few minutes later. So sad.

I swear in Chinese, and in Taiwanese when I'm *really* mad. haha ;)

Evie, thanks for the recording of I want to go to the bathroom to poopie in Chinese. I have been practicing the pronunciation, not to hard. I have played if for Mishka, he totally loves your accent. Tomorrow I will begin teaching it to him
