I tried doing this about a month ago and I felt like it was a disaster. After 2 nails she was bleeding and i couldn't bring myself to continue after i got the bleeding to stop.

I read up on it before i started but apparently i still did something wrong.

Any advice? The claws are quite long and I'm sure they are nuisance to my little girl

From what the vet told me, you just have to cut after the little blood vein in the middle, called the 'quick'.

If you cut too much off, you'll expose the blood vein and then you'll have a problem with red sticky stuff.

Just cut the very sharp end...

The quick will grow with the nail so the longer the nail the longer the quick. In order to recess the nail to where it is an acceptable lengh once the nail is overgrown, you need to only cut the very tip over the course of a few weeks.

On birds with dark nail it is impossible to see the quick. Most vets will use a dremel.

I use a dremel on my birds. I just touch the tip of the nail for a split second and if you do this every couple of weeks, the nails will get shorter.

worked up the nerve to clip yesterday. Went much much better. Just did a tiny bit to each nail no bleeding and she stayed very calm during the same thing. Might just be me but it she seems to be getting around easier now.

I have to do a nail clipping on Con soon but am unsure of how to do it properly. What's the best way to restrain the bird?

Clipping Puck is a two person job! LOL

I have a goofy bird that doesn't like to be touched but will stay fairly calm when with me. I wrapped her in a towel on my bed so she couldn't see what i was doing and quickly clips the very tips off. It worked fine and she was much more relaxed than i thought she would be.

I have made arrangements for a bird groomer to come to my home. Even though I am a nurse, clipping nails and wings is something I do not want to do. The fee she charges is well worth it.

You might try giving the bird a concrete perch. I haven't had to do my Nanday's nails in a decade since giving her that. She not only likes to sleep on it, but I see her purposefully using it as a nail file and to touch up her beak. We are both happier this way as she hates having her nails trimmed. And she, too, has black nails that I can't see the quick on.

She screams every time she sees me doing anything to my own nails, lol!

You can also use an emery board to file the nails instead of cutting if the bird is cooperative. I did that with my BC from the time she was a newly weaned baby and that worked well for us. She didn't care for her cement perch.

Also, they don't need trimmed until they are more than a half circle my vet told me. I would think some of my Nanday's nails were long and he would tell me, no they're not. So she really is keeping her nails trimmed on her own.

A birds nails r to long when the bird stands on a flate surface (Table) and the toe itself is off the table. The whole toe should be flate on the table if it is lifted then they r to long. I find using a nail file on them is safer for someone that is not sure how much to cut. Also as others have said take just the tip off then in a week or 2 do it again if they r still to long. A little at a time is much better then taking to much off and making them bleed. The cement perches work great but make sure it is the highest perch in the cage to make sure they use it. Most birds want to be as high as they can to feel safe so put it high in the cage and they will probably use it more.

My guys has beastly nails until I gave them cement perches. Now they're kept under control and it became their favorite place to hang out and rub their beaks (the sound makes me cringe)
