Sun Conure = loud? Keep your perspective!

We love our Sun - but he is so loud when he's not gettng attention or more importantly left alone (only when he knows you're around), but we were at a house ("Jamie's Dream Team" - local to us - our oldest son is cured from cancer!!!!) the other day and they rescued a white Cockatoo and OMG!!!! I can't believe how loud that cockatoo is - I am so happy that our Conure is not "really" that loud!! I thought he was until two days ago!!!! Remember be happy with what you got as the saying goes!!!

Congrats to your sons victory against cancer. I have people in my family suffering from cancer and I understand the great feeling. My aunt just beat Breast Cancer recently.

I hear you. I guess maybe people say Suns are so loud because of the annoying way they do it - not just one scream, but several shrill piercing monotone screams in a row. It can be obnoxious lol. Plus being loud in comparison to their small body size. Powerful, carrying voices for little guys, but decibel wise no, they're not what I'd call TRULY LOUD.

I was at a bird store yesterday, and it was feeding time, so I got to hear a bunch of different species yelling sounds. It was interesting.

They had 7 species of macaws from minis up to Hyacinth (though the Hy didn't scream). I noticed that from the Red Fronted (mid sized) size on up it made that pressure in my eardrums (you know the sensation I'm trying to describe?). The Severe just a bit smaller was pretty loud also but I could take it, but the RFM and larger made me feel like my eardrums were going to explode. The cockatoos and large macaws are definitely what you would call LOUD.

That is great news that your son has won the fight against cancer.

All that said, my extra funny must be small but loud!! The "old" miniature schnauzer starts barking (she is the most vicious sounding thing- lol - really she'll tear your arm off if "family" isn't with you) at a passerby, then the shih tsu starts yipping and now "screechy" joins in, I'm just glad my African cichlids don't make noise!

I'm still on the fence with Conure screams.....We took in a rescued Sun a few months ago, she's not as bad as some conures I've encountered or the ones I've had in the past, but still enough that she gets to me. But she's here cause my partner loves her dearly......She is sweet and likes being rubbed and talked to. But the moment she screams I run the other direction. I just have a low tolerance to Conure screams.....But yes I agree that Cockatoos is worse....

It's also the pitch and tone and pattern of the calls that can make it irritating or not. For some reason, Cockatiels noise drives me nuts. Conures rapid fire repetitive piercing calls are hard for me, and most Cockatoo species are very hard for me to hear.

I'd add Budgies to the list, but everytime Twigs is noisy, I tell myself that it means he's healthy and happy.
Raven mimics a human cough, but he does it really high pitched. It would be funny if it wasn't so irritating. It's one of his all time favorite noises to do unfortunately, and he goes on and on for a very long time.

Sun Conure screams are one of the screams that i just cannot endure. For some reason i can be in the same room as a screaming 'too all day long and i dont even hear it, but a Sun or Nanday reallllyyy get to me. However I am partial to sun conures. they are one of my favorite companions. Which is funny because up until august, i never had one of my own (other than my mated pair) all to myself. He is the most snuggly bird i have ever had, and a fast learner. It took a few agitated sighs and a glare from me to let him know he shouldn't be chewing on my ear buds. I swear i didn't even try to train that out of him he just got it.

Even though he is young (Hatched on Aug 9th) He will still scream like an adult. I'm assuming because he is accustomed to the sound.

Just the fact that he is so sweet makes me not even care.

And Congratulations on the great news concerning your son's non existent cancer

First and formost, congratulations on your son's cancer being gone!!! That is wonderful!!

Second, I have a sun and a U2 (and a BFA). My sun is LOUD more often (way way more often..lol) My BFA is about as loud as my sun, but it's a different tone. My U2 only "screams" maybe 4 or 5 times a day and it's at night when she is dancing and excited. It is actually cute when she does it, but yes...LOUD.

Third, I have a redtick coonhound who is louder with a more annoying bark than any of my fids..lol.

That would be a U2. They're jet engine noise loud.

Believe it or not M2's are actually a tad louder.

Macaws are about that loud as well, but they rarely scream like that for hours on end.

That is EXACTLY why it is so important not to hold a large too, too much when they are younger, and why it is so vital to teach them to self entertain....

So many of these birds turn into scream n plucks simply because they were never taught the basics, and many many more simply don't get their emotional needs met.

M2's are one of those birds that I dearly love, but am sorry were ever introduced to the pet trade. Because they can be so needy, and it is just so difficult to meet those needs... (and then they mutilate themselves!)

Conures tend to be "line of sight" screamers. If they can hear you, and know you're there, but can't see to you, they contact call.

If they can see you, it stops.

A boing on a hanger that can move room to room, or a portable table top playstand, generally drastically reduces this.

I had a sun back in the day and I won't have another Aratinga conure again. It's not so much the volume, but the pitch. It can be VERY grating. And I know my sunny was not a big screamer, but of course she DID scream and OUCH. I'm pretty sure Iris is louder volume wise, but her voice is much lower pitched, and she doesn't really scream often.

The GCC and MBC can be pretty obnoxious when they get going, but the volume is manageable to me. And I LOVE the sound of budgies, but it makes my husband a little nuts, so I can only have one and as a female, she's pretty quiet.
