Sun Conure Laying down Acting weird. WORRIED!

I brought Artee my 3 month old (hand-raised) "pied" sun conure from a local breeder, about 1 month ago.
he settled in fine once we got him a new cage and put him in my room with me with plenty of windows and air and sunlight.

Everything has been going great, then this morning..
he was his usual loud self demanding breakfast and his cage to be cleaned.
i opened his cage and cleaned it and made him breaky and cleaned his bowls.
All went fine and usual, he got out of his cage and on top of his play pen on top of the cage,

then he was very interested in my window louvers and the stick that hangs down and controls them. He wanted to bite the stick..

Now a quick little back story, we just moved into this house as renters a few months ago..
and the people that were in this house before us obviously had a bird of some kind in this room as well, as the other louver stick has been bitten to shreds... ( so i thought if the other bird had been chewing the stick for that long.. surely it mustn't be that deadly.... )

So thus i moved his cage a little closer so her could play with it. He then did so for about 2 minutes, then i thought about it and got worried that he'd get sick..
so i took it off him.
then he got a little mad then went and played with his other toys.

then he was squawking at me about 30 mins later..

then tried to fly out the window when i started my coffee grinder.. which he has never done.. ( mind you, the window was closed witha slight a-jar crack for breeze as it doesnt have a fly screen, and he has his wings clipped.. thats how i got him, im letting him grow them out.)

so he hit the window and hit the deck, he would've dropped about 130cm
with the assist of him flapping so it wasn't that hard...

now he only lets me pick him up out of his cage with a perch.. slowly training him to move to my finger...

but if he falls off of his cage he will happily get on my finger every time...

Now this is when he turned weird.. he wasn't shaking or anything.. he was very calm..
and for the first time every he let me touch him and give him a scratch...
this has never happened.

then he didn't seem to want to go back in his cage as usual.. he didn't seem to mind being on my finger..

he didn't wanna move at all really..

he usually is trying to fly off my finger onto his cage.. but he was just sitting there not moving a muscle..

then he jumped up onto his hammock bed.. and has been laying there since....

he has cleaned himself.. but we are in Australia.. its 30 degrees Celsius here at 9am. its too hot for him to be in his hammock during the day.. he never does..

I'm a new parrot owner.. im worried as hell..


there's probably a few things that could explain why hes acting the way he is...


UPDATE, I just tried to feed him a pellet. He ate it and seems to be up on his feet again..

still in his hammock but on his feet and eating the pellet :06:

Do you have access to an avian vet? It seems like odd behaviour to me and I would probably get it checked out. He could have ingested something that isn’t agreeing with him, the heat could be getting to him, he could have hit harder than you think when he flew at the window. He just sounds too young to be hanging out in his hammock in the heat. Usually birds hide things pretty well, so abnormal behaviour can be cause for concern. I tend to err on the side of caution personally. Let us know how he does?

Thanks Jen, He came out of his hammock for a couple of minutes for a stretch and a drink. He has gone back inside, but is a lot more playful now.
I have been using his favorite perch to lure him out, he likes to chew on it.. but still doesn't seem to want to come out of his hammock.. i have all the windows open with the ceiling fan on and a floor fan facing his cage. SO hopefully it isn't too hot for him..
We have vets around but no specialist aviary vets. And they cost a fortune here..

He has a lot more life in him.. he is just still a little bit out of it..

If he continues to act like this through out the day i will definitely take him to our vet.


UPDATE: hes back out of his hammock hanging upside down, but still hanging around it?

I also did start first day of work yesterday and was gone from 4am till 10pm

so it was his first day without me yesterday as well.?
maybe this could have something to do with it?

I don't have time to reply currently, but he sounds like he may be sick and needs a vet. I am sorry you are dealing with this! Stress is no fun.

Birds also should not have hammocks--they can pose threats in terms of intestinal blockages and tend to be MASSIVE hormone triggers.

Good to hear that he seems better! Please keep a close eye on him, I still think his behaviour is concerning. Changes in routine can definitely affect their behaviour too - might be feeling a bit uncertain because he’s not accustomed to being alone. You could try leaving a radio on for him while you are at work if that’s an option. Be cautious with open windows (you mentioned no screen in your initial post), it’s so easy to lose them due to being spooked - even with clipped wings. Hoping all is well with him, and he’s just a bit put out because you left him for a long day yesterday

I'm torn. My first instinct is he hurt himself in the fall, and is taking it easy. Birds bodies don't have padding, so they can hurt themselves easy. And I would wait till tomorrow and see.
I would also make sure he has water for baths to help him regulate his temp when he wants.
You don't have smokey air from the fires do you?

Hey Laura, Thank you for the reply.

He always has a full clean water bowl to bathe in, which he does at least once every 2 days or so.

He drinks from it as well as a water feeder that he was raised on, brought it from the breeder with Artee.

He has a bit more life in him, he is running around the cage again.. hanging upside down, a bit hesitant to get on his favorite perch now tho? he usually jumps straight on.. but now he is just holding onto it and chewing on it.

He does seem to be hot.. his feathers are darker and pushed up against his body..

he has alot of cool breeze on him and honestly my room would be the coolest in the house..

and no i am in central Queensland, we haven't got any fires around here atm.

it is just a rather hot day.

Thank you again jen! yes im very cautious with the open windows.. he can get out of his cage himself and does most days, when i see him outside of his cage i slightly shut the window and move his cage closer to it..

when he is in his cage i open it up.

He doesn't really like leaving his cage, he has never tried to fly away or anything.. even when he has escaped his cage and gone to his play pen while the window was open wide..

he just sits there in the cool breeze and watches the worl go by.

He is a very smart young boy.
Very well behaved.

UPDATE: He is still going solid.. I've hung around him all day and have been talking to him.. he seems a lot better now.. just still a little hesitant to go on the perch with me holding it.
Hes eating his fresh apple and is drinking water..
i moved the floor fan much closer to him so he has a lot more constant breeze on him

he seems to have colored back up and is fluffing up a bit more.

I’m glad you were able to find a bird vet in your town. Which town is that by way? I’m in Brisbane and I’d recommend my vet but you sound like you’re a long way away.

It’s always a good idea to have a wellness check in the early stages anyway to rule out any sneaky underlying nasties like psittacosis that can cause major problems later on.

Other than that welcome to you and Artee, it’s always nice to have another Queeeeeeeeeeenslandeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr aboard!

I would actually move the fan so it isn't blowing on him---you don't want a constant breeze on a bird.
