Sun Conure Hit a Window and Worried

Please be praying, as Peace flew into a window and seemed a bit dazed. He was on the ground with his wings out and I freaked out. His sister was really wild or upset when she wanted something and made him fly away. I am VERY cautious with neck breaks- his left foot seemed very limp when i picked him up. So I've had him with me the entire time sitting on my chest. His sister kept trying to preen him and he has moved his head a bit but he has been very still on my shoulder. I am praying against head trauma, cause he was on the ground with his wings spread out and head low....and his eyes were squinted.....not ready for another death.

I looked up several sites on what to do and they included taking to the vet. When I stroke him gently, he responds.

He seems to move and and turn his head - body warmth is good and it Seems she's trying to help. Qui Qui keeps jumping in my face when I am paying attention to him, after prunning him as well,, although a bit annoying since every time I was talking to him and he started to nibble my lip, Qui Qui jumped in/started doing it.

It's a bit difficult considering how PeCee was always very hesistant about flying compared to his sister....and going into a window didnt help. I had been planning on getting wings clipped before things happened.

Not sure if I mentioned this to you already...
Recommended to me in the early days... "wall and window training"... taking the bird around to walls and windows, and encouraging them to tap or at least experience the situation, so they can see that walls are WALLS and windows are HARD AIR. Has worked for us.

Sorry this happened. I'm typing this as fast as I could so you could read it and take immediate action. My sun conure, Boomer, has had a concussion before. He was out of it for 5-10 minutes (flailing wings, then limp 1 wing, then limp body), but after that he was up and even flying. He was weak - but the point is that he was mobile. Took him to the vet and he got anti-inflammatory shots. Will explain this further. My point is, if your bird is down or weak for longer than 10 minutes, it's a definite cause for concern. First thing you need to do:

- Concussed birds become extremely sensitive to light. Darken the room immediately.
- Get him warm and comfortable
- Get him in a smaller cage with low perches. Pad the bottom with lots of towels. This will protect further injuries in case he falls from his perch.
- Make sure he eats, even if it means feeding him his favorite treats (I'm talking seeds, nuts, yogurt).
- Call a vet immediately and explain as clearly as you can his symptoms. My vet gave Boomer an anti-inflammatory shot because he had bad bruising around his eyes and nares. This prevents possible bloating in the brain. Ask your vet to check for broken bones. They can do this by touch, as opposed to say, putting the bird to sleep and taking an x-ray which comes with it's own set of risks.

When your bird has recovered enough, let him explore the window with his beak. He needs to understand what it is. Do the same for mirrors. You may want to put some decals or decorations on the actual window so it doesn't look like a wide open space. I don't do this personally because my birds now understand that there's a glass in between.

A baby cockatiel in my last clutch hit a window and died this way. She was the same, wings sprawled out and head low, tail feathers all fluffed out. I don't mean to scare you, but that is what happens when birds fly into windows. I've had others in the past hit one and were fine, just a little dazed. His paralysis could very well just be a temporary thing, as I've seen wild birds hit windows in my parent's old house.

It usually paralyzes them for a few minutes and then they slowly regain their limb function and fly off. It sounds similar to your sun. If he is still not able to move in another hour, I would take him to the vet as soon as you can. Also, BoomBoom's above advice is excellent.

The only thing I can add to what has been said above is try not to panic.
Birds can pick up on your emotions and being in panic mode won't help.
I have had my cockatiels hit wall and window before. they were stunned but shock it off.

Please get him to an avian vet immediately. I lost my 10 month old green cheek conure this way a little over a year ago, it was awful. I rushed her immediately to the 24/7 emergency animal hospital that night and she had a concussion, no broke bones per the x-ray. I brought her home on pain meds and was going to take her to her avian vet the next morning, as she seemed better when we got home. I put her in a hospital cage and the next morning she died. My avian vet said a lot of birds die from flying into things simply from the shock of it.

Skittles has had several window scares. Normally, he avoids them, but when he is startled, he dashes for them.

The first time he hit a window, he seemed fine after. But his most recent encounter (this past summer), his right foot went numb and he couldn't move it. This happened for several minutes but eventually he was able to perch with it and seemed better, but I wasn't. I panicked and called the vet. They were able to fit him in that day, so I drained my savings to pay for a ride to take him in. They did a full exam on him and he was not injured but the vet told me it was a good thing I brought him in cause you can never be too sure. She checked for breaks, bruises and any sort of concussion.

Now, I keep the venetian blinds down and open during the day rather than pulled up. This way he avoids the windows if he panics.

He normally knows to avoid the windows- but when they are in 'panic mode', all else goes out the window (so to speak). So its always best to provide some form of window obstruction so they don't see it as a quick escape in a panic.

Both times, when this happened I picked him up and held him so he knew he was safe. This is always VERY important. I had a budgie once that got caught in a fly trap one evening and the vet was closed. I called the emergency vet and they said he would likely die from shock. I gave him a bath in warm water to wash off the stickness, wrapped him in a towel, made a pot of coffee and stayed up all night holding him. He made it through, the vet told me had I not done what I did, he likely would have died- but by holding him through the night, got him through the shock.

All the bird I've ever had ran into walls but never Windows. Now I prefer to keep them clipped, but they still walk into walls and other objects. Now I've owned 7 birds is total and I highly doubt they were all blind, they were just retarded.
Nothing happens when my birds hit walls, they just keep flying.

Hoping for the very best outcome for Peace. As others have suggested, a visit with an avian vet may be best. They can diagnose some issues, give pain meds, etc.

Please let us know of any progress. You are not alone.

Thankful for everyone calling in. He started to fly around again the same day (after 30 minutes or so) and bob his head and I did sing songs to him while he nibbled my lip. Qui Qui, I realize, does not like not being dominant since she vied for my atttention the entire time. Everytime I was talking to PeCee and he started to nibble my lip, Qui Qui jumped in/started doing it like she was haivng a meltdown not getting attention

But He's doing much better today and I'm glad for the foods he was able to take that helped out a lot (focusing on foods high in vitamin c, as vitamin c is a natural anti-inflammatory ).

And IT wasn't an option, for me. I saw him fly around again and thought "Seriously???!"

I am glad blueberries do seem to work well - effective for him in regards to any inflammatory issue. He didn't want to eat at first, but he seemed to eat them afterward and it made a big difference. I DID check my book on Conures first and it said Blueberries were fine. And he has been bouncing around since. Thankful for being able to contact the vet/follow up and praying for him to stay healthy, as we went around the house and I had him hit on windows so he'd know the difference. What I noticed was that his sister was the one who'd freak out and fly as if there was danger and he flew too, so I put her in the cage and worked with him the day after to show him what all the windows were.

Very glad for their improvement. I had a lot of things to do - but after baby-sitting, glad they had free time and got to do their favorite activities with flying around and jam session (as PCee loves dancing to music/people singing and Qui Qui sticks beside her brother watching before she looks to explore/do mischief really low key and follow me around everywhere).

Glad my baby boy was acting fully normal after his accident this week and so proud his sister helped him get healthy again - and glad they're very content, as they flew to me/l sat beside me for a good minute watching photos edited after they posed for pictures (and they live for being photogenic). I'm thankful God blessed me with my well-trained but highly wild babies (paradoxical as it seems) rocking their patterns (with PCee in front, having red highlights on his eyes whereas his sister has yellow now).
