Lukah- Sun Conure, 10 months old!
Hi guys. My sun conure is about 6 months old now and as of today he has been getting a litttttle too comfortable with my hand! (Also I don't know for sure it's a he, I just like calling him a he instead of an it). So up until today he has HATED hands. he doesn't like them near him, pointing at him, touching him or anything!

That being said, I was doing some training with him. I've trained him to give a kiss when I make a kiss-y noise and was working on getting him to step up onto my finger, which he actually started to do. Well, he did it three times and then the fourth time he walked to my finger, pushed his head under it and then slowly turned and began to rub his rump on it! (Yes I know what he was doing. After all, it's spring! hahah)

Anyway, the thing is I read online that this behavior should be discouraged (but not punished). However, it's hard to do that because he was finally starting to get used to hands and fingers (even if for different reasons than I'd like!)!

What do you guys recommend doing?

PS- I've had him for about a month now. He's five and a half months old and has had four owners and lived in two different states during that time. Trust is definitely a big deal in this birdie relationship!

Kellie, you're going to have to restrict the television Lukah watches, because puberty for sun conures runs between 18 & 24 months old.....6 months is way too early.....

Keep up with the training, but during their hormonal season, limit body handling to only scritches above the shoulders, no back, or under wing touching, petting, stroking.....in birdom, that's reserved for a bird's mate.....you will not see non-bonded/mated pairs preening anything but head & neck feathers that a bird cannot reach.....

You'll have to learn to distract him...put him back in his cage, on his play stand or some neutral place.....
