Suitable conures to go with a GCC??

I have pretty much decided that I want to get another conure, its for both me and persie, I am out all day so would like company for him but I am more than prepared for the extra hassle of 2 birds, its something I have thought about for a while and am happy to go ahead with...

Now I have looked many times at getting a cockateil but I am put off as it would mean a full time second cage, I would prefer to share a cage. I understand that you cant just dump a new bird straight in the same cage and I also understand that they may never want to share a cage but I would like to aim for this. Persie is still young (10 months) so I hope he would adapt and allow another bird to share his cage.

So apart from another GCC what other conures would be advisable to share a cage or would it only be a GCC?

Well not lonag after I wrote this I have found someone local who has a 4 mth old GCC which he is struggling with a bit, he reckons she doesn't like being handled and although is a very happy, friendly bird he feels he hasn't the time to tame her properly, sounds like the sort of thing I am after. I am at home every evening and weekends and with persie being so friendly Iwould hope she would follow his example after some gentle persuasion...

Think my mind is made up, looking forward to seeing her now...

Dont forget to quarantine him for at least 30 days!

If you can, I would have separate Cages for them, rather than housing them together.

The reason I would like them to share a cage is that I will be building an indoor aviary in the conservatory (once I have built it!) so I would like to get the co-habiting comfortably. As for quarantine, is it a case of seperate rooms to keep them in or just not letting them near each other for a month? The new one I am getting has just had a check up with the vets and be declared healthy, persie had his about 4 months ago as well...

Quarantine is keeping them in totally separate Rooms and away from each other completely for the 30 Days.

Seeing that picture of the cage concerns me... please, if you can, secure it with something other than that perch when it's open! Am I correct in seeing a lock at the top of the cage to keep it closed when not in use?


If you don't end up with another green cheek, I would recommend another of the Pyrrhura species, and I would recommend getting a bird of the same sex so as to prevent hybridization. Other birds include black capped conure, maroon bellied conure, white eared conure, fiery shouldered conure, etc...

I am against placing birds in the same cage. The birds will bond with one another and treat you as the third wheel. Birds are very territorial about their cages. What if your old ends up harming your new bird. Cages are not expensive you can always get a good deal on Amazon.com. Once you have funds then you should move forward with adding a new bird. Parrots do not need friends because they are all ready bonded with you. If you get a new bird it should be because you want a new bird not the other way around.
