split claw...

at some time in the past week Ms. Prissy beak managed to crack one of her claws. She sometimes chews them quite vigorously when preening and tends to keep them trimmed quite nicely herself, could she have done it to herself?

in any case, it has a small fracture starting near the tip and has begun to split a little bit, maybe a couple of millimeters up the length of the claw. Should something be done about this? can it be trimmed or filed, or should I just leave it alone? do something else?

Just a suggestion, in case you don't have some on hand already, I would pick up some quick stop ( stiptic powder ) just in case she snags it and it begins to bleed, not sure if you do your own bird grooming or not, but it might be a good idea to see if you can get it to where it won't be a hazard by filing it smooth, if you take her to get groomed you'll want to make sure they use a clean towel and disinfected clippers, (my big nightmare when I see grooming done in pet stores), I don't worry to much about that at the vet's office, but they usually charge a pretty stiff fee, between $25-$45 is about average, I do my own grooming, but it's not for the impatient

thanks Bobby! I've been planing on doing my own grooming, but as I have let her wings grow out and she keeps her nails trimmed herself I haven't had to yet! I'm going with Baby to vist my girlfiend (and her bird Cody) this afternoon, I know she has a good diamond nail file and I may try to shape the split bit down so it's unlikely to snag. Baby is such a good, gentle, girl I should have no problem... Famous last words.

I'll also see about finding some quickstop, though I haven't seen it in any of the local stores I've heard cornstarch is a good substitute?

Never tried corn starch but its been around a long time and used for years for that purpose back in the day, last time I went to one of the large chain pet stores and asked for some Kwik-stop they had no clue what I was talking about, there are other brands such as nik-stop and quick blood stopper, they all pretty much do the same thing, you just have to find someone that knows what your talking about :09:

Suggest to people to have a bird first aide kit in the home or the makings of one. On Windy City it is about $25. It has the QS. I also keep organic corn starch for emergencies. Hope your bird heals.
