This is crazy I just found out that the spix macaw is now completely extinct in the wild. This is so sad

This is very sad. Nowadays their number increases (now is about 160) and in 2021 they're going to set free (I don't how many). I hope this will succeed

I thought they were preparing to reintroduce some captive bread birds back into the wild.

There is a breeding program in Brazil and Saudi Arabia. The ones in Brazil was going to try to introduce them back into the wild. I understand that they are not very successful breeders but I don't know why that is.

There is a breeding program in Brazil and Germany (they was transferred from Quatar). I did't know they was trying, maybe I made some mistake

I hope they aren't really gone...Do they count as extinct if the remaining population is captive? Nat Geo seems to think they are "extinct" (See link above) but I am hoping they have a different understanding of the word's technicalities...

If the only population is in captivity, we say they are extinct “in the wild”. They aren’t considered extinct, period, in this scenario.
