I'm hopefully going to get a hand-raised baby lovebird around mid-December, but I know I'll be going away for 2-3 weeks next June (2012).

I've done a lot of reading, and most sources agree that so long as you've handled the baby everyday for five-six months and spent plenty of time playing with it until it reaches full maturity, going away won't harm your relationship with the bird in the long run (I've read when you come home they give you the cold-shoulder for a day or two, but they're soon back to the way they were before you left them).

However I've also read that lovebirds, particularly Fischer's and masks, are known to "regress" if they're not handled every day.

Going away is a rarity for me, so please don't think I'll be making a habit of leaving my bird (and of course if I do go away I'll be leaving it with someone experienced and trustworthy).

However, do you think it would be best for me to wait until after June next year to get a lovebird?

What is your experience with your lovebird/s and going away?

I just want to make sure I do as right by the bird as I can :)

It will probably be perfectly fine.I don't think it matters for just 2 to 3 weeks. As you said, they might give a cold shoulder for a day or two but then they'll be fine :)

I currently own a lovebird and I'm not too sure about the same thing. I own a rosiecollis and so did my dad, we went on a 2 week vaccacion to england, and the seemingly very healthy bird died of what appeared to be a broken heart. 1 week and a half into our holiday. I do know my dad did alot with him and they did have a very strong bond. Goodluck though, and I'm quite sure unless I find out anything else I will be going over for 1 week visits to england but not much more... Good luck

I dont think there is a risk that a bird will die from a broken heard when going on vacation. i think there is a lot of otheter explanations

Not sure, my dad is concidered a good parrot owner, as an IT Technichian, he googles everything about his birds. He has owned several amazonians, rescued 2 cory sheerwaters and released them back healthy, and owned many lovebirds and tiels. This was the only death. (Apart from a spanish "cernicalo" eagle, that was found in bad condition, died overnight.)

It wont be a problem but you should expect the cold shoulder all the same. I had love birds growing up and they adjust fine to a short seperation. Plus, you said a trustworthy person will care for it.

I on the other hand couldn't go on a vacation if I wanted to :)
I don't know anyone who would be willing to care for my fids. My scarlet is aggressive towards everyone but me and will climb down off of what ever he is on and hunt you down :)
I would hate for him to be kept in his cage all day

Don't worry, it will be fine
Enjoy your vacation
