I'm hopefully going to get a hand-raised baby lovebird around mid-December, but I know I'll be going away for 2-3 weeks next June (2012).
I've done a lot of reading, and most sources agree that so long as you've handled the baby everyday for five-six months and spent plenty of time playing with it until it reaches full maturity, going away won't harm your relationship with the bird in the long run (I've read when you come home they give you the cold-shoulder for a day or two, but they're soon back to the way they were before you left them).
However I've also read that lovebirds, particularly Fischer's and masks, are known to "regress" if they're not handled every day.
Going away is a rarity for me, so please don't think I'll be making a habit of leaving my bird (and of course if I do go away I'll be leaving it with someone experienced and trustworthy).
However, do you think it would be best for me to wait until after June next year to get a lovebird?
What is your experience with your lovebird/s and going away?
I just want to make sure I do as right by the bird as I can
