Hi all,
I have a fourteen year old tiel, Peaches. I've had her since she was two and she thinks she's still a young lady. She was quite a chronic layer when she was young (and before I became aware that I shouldn't help contribute to more cockatiels, when there are already so many who need homes) and ended up having A LOT of babies.
After lupron shots and all the other interventions, we finally got her to stop laying with only a few relapses over the years.
Unfortunately, for some reason, she seems to think it's time to be a mom again. I just don't get it. We did get lazy a couple years ago and now the birds eat more seed than pellets. (I know, shame on me) So, I'm once again trying to get my birds back on 90% plus pellets.
ANYWAYS< Peaches has tried to lay about 4 times in the last year, all soft shelled eggs. (along with four vet trips for related breathing issues). It never went beyond the second egg; She would quickly recover and I would relax.
But now, here we are at the fourth episode this year> She was breathing heavily for over five days; When antibiotics didn't work, we got her back to the vet. We left her over night and Viola!! She laid another egg. Soft shelled, again. Her breathing improved and the vet gave her a calcium shot and sent her home with neo calglucon.
Does anyone have any similar experiences? She's had quite a life, including a broken shoulder, a broken leg, gangrene to the same leg a few years later while I was on vacation (I came home, just to have to rush her to the vet at rush hour on a friday. THank God the vet was still open and waited; That was another 1,200 when all was said and done. She's my 3,000 dollar cockatiel!!)the chronic laying..........But she is our special little lady. Amazing how much love a little bird can inspire.
Any help, suggestions are appreciated. I'm a little out of practice with broody female birds.
I'm particularly wondering if the neo calglucon will be ok, or if she may need a more complete mineral supp with calcium, magnesium and D3. If so, ideas where I can get a good price on such a thing online.
Thanks,
Tracie
