Hi everyone,

I noticed about a week ago that one of my aviary birds, Michelle, had an enlarged/swollen chest. Initially I thought that she had perhaps eaten a lot (for example, Pearl is a glutton and after a big meal she often looks really full, so I assumed that at first with this budgie). However, this swelling didn't go down over the next day, so I immediately made an appointment and took her to the vet.

The vet felt her crop, and said that there is a small mass inside, but the only way to know is to operate and take a sample/remove it. My only thoughts are this:

- Crop impaction from something in the aviary (I don't know what, I can't think of anything in particular that would cause it)
- A fatty tumour, like a lipoma
- A malignant tumour

What I am most concerned about is the surgery. When Sunshine, who had a malignant sarcoma (we didn't know this until the sample came back) went in for surgery, she didn't make it. I know that she was very sick and the tumour had likely spread, I still worry that poor Michelle will not make it through surgery either. She is healthy otherwise, eating normally (for now, I imagine that the mass is affecting her ability to eat), and she is still able to fly (however, her body is a lot heavier than normal).

She went in this morning. I just don't know how likely it is for any budgie to survive surgery - I know it does happen, but such a tiny little bird is so at risk.

I've had enough losses for one year. My dog Layla passed away, and two budgies, Sunshine and Emerald, also did. I just don't know how I will handle this if Michelle doesn't make it. If it's crop impaction, I know I will blame myself - maybe if it is the vet will be able to tell me what it is from, like maybe a colour or a texture, and I'll be able to determine what kind of toy/item caused it in the aviary. Then again, budgies are so prone to tumours, so it may be something entirely out of my control.

:(

I'm sorry for your losses... sending light to you.

Wishing Michelle the best xx

If you do nothing, I am guessing things will be worse than if you do something. I am so sorry you are going through this stress. I am assuming the vet would have steered you in another direction had the benefits NOT outweighed the risks. Good luck and I hope everything goes well! Again, it sounds like you are doing the right thing, as doing nothing would likely prove fatal.

Awe, we're thinking about you and are sending positive energy your way...And just for a little peace of mind, I have seen several Budgies make it through surgery just fine over the years. It's usually the anesthesia that kills birds during surgery, but you're right, if the bird has something else going on or is older, then that makes it much more complicated...But as stated above, if she doesn't have the surgery to diagnose what the mass is, then the end-result is definite. So this has to be done...

And aviary birds can eat/swallow anything and everything outside, so if it is something in her crop please don't blame yourself.

Keep us posted on how she's doing...

I'm so sorry for your l
Loss. I recently lost one of my GCC, and non bird people don't get how much that hurts. I truly hope things go well with the crop issue. I join all here who care and understand your bond with you feathered friend

reebsie, you're one of my very favorite people here. I am holding you and little Michelle in my heart. I'll be waiting for news. xo

I'm hoping for the very best outcome for your little Michelle and keeping you in my thoughts.

Still doing the positive thought-thingy ...

Sending positive vibes your way.

All my positive thoughts headed to Michelle. So sorry for your other losses. ❤️

Hi everyone! So good news. The vet chose not to operate on her.

He put her under anaesthetic and did a lot of procedures (crop needling, x rays, etc), and determined that she likely just has an inflammation in the lower half of her crop. He said he couldn’t find anything that would suggest a tumour or impaction. He has prescribed some medication, which I will be mixing in with some boiled eggs every morning. I’ll be taking her in for another check up fairly soon to see if it is anything else, or if it doesn’t improve.

She ate very well this evening, so I’m just keeping her warm and in an environment that can help her to recover from such a stressful day. Not very nice to be poked and prodded at! But I’m glad she made it through the anaesthetic, and that she is still okay.

The vet also said she seems like a very healthy bird overall, which gave me hope.

I hope that her recovery from this ordeal is smooth. What a relief.

I am sure that was a relief, and now you know that he had a good look at her, so that helps too!

That's great news! You've got a little fighter there. Sending you lots of good vibes.

Fantastic news, I am so happy for you and Michelle!

You clearly have a cautious CAV who kept an open mind and pursued every avenue short of exploratory surgery. I hope Michelle continues to recover from her ordeal and recovers from the inflammation!
