I got this little fellow from an older family member who wasn't able to care for him and he was living in sub-standard conditions. Lights on all the time, loud TV, and rather small dirty cage and alone most of the time. The first day with me he was in a larger cage, in a room with 3 sides of windows, we kept the curtain closed on the one closest to him so as not to freak him out. We started on a strict sleep time of 10 hours of dark quiet sleep a night. The first day I stayed with him and he watched me the entire day followed me around the cage whenever I moved around the room. He is in the room I read and write in, so I will be with him a lot and I am very used to bird sounds. My husband and I have rescued 10 roosters and have had occasion to bring them in for injuries or because one is getting picked on or getting mean and needs a little extra lovin'. Roosters crow around every 15 minutes and start at around 4 am. Since chickens hate being alone they all march into our bedroom to roost in the corner of our bedroom. This guy sings compared to them. Anyway, we aren't even sure what breed this little guy is. I tried to post last night, but I don't think it worked. Can anyone tell me what breed this little guy is? He was sold as an Amazon, but I'm pretty sure that's not true. Don't really care, I love birds. They don't have to talk or love me back. I have named him Piccolo. He had no name. First vet visit is today. I think he has a clogged nostril and I have no idea how to get him to eat something other than seeds or what vitamins he should be on. Anyone got any advice?

Hello! You did an amazing job on rescuing this poor bird! I don’t know many parrot species but he from the picture he looks like a white capped pionus.

you're right he's a WCP :)

What a beautiful White Capped Pionus! They are similar in body type to Amazons but not the same :)

I would definitely treat your existing flock for mites if you haven’t already :)

Congratulations,! Welcome,! Takes time to get eating healthy. Lots of fresh veggies no onion no Avacado! Watch out for household toxins like Teflon or snu non stick cookware as they release to I that can kill your bird in seconds,! Try warm cooked sweet potato, peppers like bell and red chilli peppers they usually love them right away! Don't ever use can Ed, only fresh, it frozen veggies. Mine love peas, pumpkin, cooked butternut squash broccoli, bok choy, sometimes you have to offer over and over. If you eat a plate if veggies with them on the table with you, abd their own plate it allow to steal from your plate that sometimes works. You can try offering a little if this and that by hand. Mango and plums are good fruits to offer, or blackberries and rasberry. Fruits are iffere less often than veggies. Good luck keep us posted!

Yeah, we look over our chickens pretty well. So far no mites. But you never know. Very good point. I'm not sure they really need to be in close contact. I'd be paranoid my free range chickens could be carrying something they can handle but could get Piccolo sick.

Welcome to you and newly rescued Piccolo!

Hopefully you will be visiting a certified avian vet - far better than one advertised as "exotic" and often without the specialized knowledge, training, and equipment.

Tami2 posted some excellent links, keep in mind reading select "sticky" threads in the New Member, General Parrot, Health Care, Training, and Parrot Food forums will give great education. As you know parrots do not come with an "owners manual!"

What a sweet story and a sweet little guy. Thank you for taking him in and I'm sure he will actually love you back and will be roosting in your arms in no time.

Welcome! Great insight already given, being cautious of the chickens. It is great that you have taken him in, looks like a Pionus. Very nice cage he has.
