the idea was great , the socks were expensive , and he is starting to pluck way more especially around his neck area and his legs so I talked to my vet today and he is going to see what kind of E collars he has and revise one to fit Smokey , I have ran out of ideas on what to do with him and I really didn't want to put a collar on him but I have no choice , this is the first bird I have ever had that plucks , so this plucking business is new to me , does anyone have any birds that ware a collar? and how did that go? he said it takes them 3 or 4 days to get use to it and he will be on meds in his drinking water for a little while to help calm him

Neytiri was in a cone for about 3 months while she healed from a plucking that was do to an infected preening gland. She did well with it and figured out how to get around and even preen a little.

My male parrotlet had been a plucker for several years, but no, I don't have any experience with a collar, I had overloaded him with stimulation including toys, pinecones, kabobs, and finally, a female parrotlet and he stopped and is now fully feathered. I feel bad that you have to deal with that, something about puckers just distresses me, but I know there are a lot worse things. I do think he will adjust to a collar - I have had dogs that had to wear them, and you can probably take it off him when you have him out with you, so maybe it won't be so bad.

I hope he doesn't have to ware it forever , just until his feathers grow back and hopefully he will stop plucking , if not he will be wearing it a long time

I know of a cuckatoo that wears one. When he came to the rescue he was a severe mutilator. He now hates his collar off.... I think he feels safe in it.
Just something to think about.

I decided not to put the collar on Smokey, since he does not mutilate his body I will just do some minor adjustments to his sock buddy , like make it a turtle neck and I plan on buying some Aloe Vera Juice Saturday before I leave work and give him more aloe baths

Rocky's I'm laughing at the idea of your bird in a turtleneck lol - please, please post a pic of that :)

That's a good idea to try to handle the plucking problem, and you can always try the collar at a later time if you felt the need.
