Parrots
Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
....trying to get fluff boy to eat good stuff. I know 'tiels have a tinier belly than a 'Zon has..but geez.

I fixed them both lunch and put BB's plate on my computer desk and told him to chow. Sure he did. He actually picked at a piece of broc and cauliflower,a piece of green pepper and a raison, but it was just two or three picks at each item, then he wanted to run up my arm and sing to me.
When I shoe'd him back down,he was more interested in playing, running across my keyboard, banging his beaky on my soda can,or chewing on papers hanging from a shelf.
Now he is back at his plate picking. I AM proud of him actually trying new things.

I am used to "larger" parrots eating, whereas Amy,Smokey, even the cockatoo man, would sit at their bowls for five minutes or so and chow down.

Am I expecting too much from my little boy??

Sounds like a busy Tiel eating pattern. A body in constant motion with breaks between to eat something. Than back getting into everything!

Congratulations on having a busy body!

What you are seeing is why keeping track of their weight is so very important. Its the only way to determine if they are getting enough to eat.

Yes Steven..I guess I'll have to invest in a gram scale. The boy is in constant motion from the moment he is out of his house until I put him back in. He is climbing this, jumping on that, chewing here and there..I'm concerned he is expending more calories than what he is taking in lol.

right now as I type,he is on my desk, picking at the keys as I type...banging on my cell phone sitting here,he is now inside one of the cubbys chewing on papers..such a busy little boy.

Amy is sitting next to us on "her" chair..looking and saying "huh??...huh??" Watching him is probably making her tired lol.

Jim, they are pretty cheap on Amazon, like $20 or so and they come with the suction cu t stand. Salty chows down on his chop for a few min, then plays, , rinse repeat.
His weight in the Am is 282-285. It was higher at one point but he has leveled off.

It's a "tiel thing"... trust me. I have always been envious of conures and other larger species of birds in the fact that they actually eat things if you know what I mean LOL

For example the IRN will eat an entire grape like it's nothing... he gobbles it down (it was refreshing to watch a bird that actually eats!).... whereas both my tiels and any tiel I have ever owned simply don't eat with same "force" ("force" isn't the right word I'm looking for... I don't know what word I meaning to use LOL) like a GCC would. ;)

My tiels LOVE baked potato or baked sweet potato... they go CRAZY when it's ready... then they take 3 or 4 bites and walk away... I'm like "that's it????!!!" Drives me crazy... but that's how it is. 'Nut tends to eat a tiny bit more than Rascal but they are both morons LOL

... well except 'Nut does peck at broccoli for several minutes at a time and he loves broccoli and strawberries... kale too :) Rascal does not.

Guys/Girls Well from one 'too mum who is trying very hard to restrict intake please don't beat yourselves up, BB, Rascal and lil' 'nut all sound very happy and healthy.

Now the , you let that little guy run up your arm and sing anytime he wants!!!!!

Don't make me come over there, Jim.

Don't worry jazz does the same thing! I switched her to a pellet diet, but I think I spoil her to a point cause I mix all different types so I know she can pick through what she wants and I know it's healthy for the most part. She ALWAYS wants what I am having but only a little bit. Then she gets distracted and chews on some paper she finds or something.

I know the one thing I don't do that a lot of people do is make chop. I worry she isn't eating enough of her pellets and stuff but she gained like 8 grams last time she went to the vet and is well within the healthy weight zone. Do you only feed them at designated feeding times or do you provide pellets at all times in your tiels cage?

I usually eat when I go into work, since she comes with I noticed she likes to eat when I eat, so I fill her travel bowl up and she chows down for a good 5, 10 minutes while I eat. I think it's cute. That's really the only time I see her sit and eat for more than just a few seconds at a time.

Yum...yes he has fruity pellets at all times in his tidy bowl..along with a special tiel blend seed I got from his breeder. BUT he has been to his doc twice for a bacterial infection...his poo has been real watery and he drinks way too much. He was put on an antibiotic and it cleared up within two weeks but came back. So his doc said his diet needs to be changed and I'm working on that. Before he refused to eat anything "good" Oh he LOVES mashed taters and Ramen noodles or millet but wouldn't touch broc or cauliflower or beans..ok he does like sweet corn.

And he LOVES to eat with ME...but my work schedule doesn't allow that every day. I don't have to work the next three nights,so I make it a point to make him lunch or dinner and put his plate down on my desk and then he will eat new things.
Today was really the FIRST day he picked at multiple "good" items..but like I said..it's just a pick here and pick there

Jim how about mashed (sweet) tater with mashed broc and cauli added? Very little to start with, adding a bit more each time? We will get little Beebs to eat healthy LOL.

My tiels were always dreaming of becoming junk food junkies. I promise they were scheming to replace me with someone who would give them churros or anything besides fresh food. Still missing my perch potatoes after all these years.
