So annoyed by this: someone “adopts” a lost cockatiel instead of finding his home

Hi everyone,

Saw this video on YouTube today and it upsets me so much. This guy so casually takes a clearly tame and well-cared for lost bird in without attempting to find his home, even introducing him to his own parrots, with intent of keeping him. Maybe he had already tried to look, but he makes no mention of it and this negatively portrays to people that you can just take in a lost bird as your own without attempting to find the owners.

I would be heartbroken and livid if my bird went missing and someone found him and didn’t try to find his real home.

wow he took a bird that he doesn’t know, in to meet his parrots with what appears to be no quarantine...

Hopefully fate works things out and that birdie finds his way home if possible.

That sort of thing makes my blood boil.

I had "one of those" birds... :( only, the person/family that found the bird were not fit to have animals, period. Instead of thinking 'who lost their bird?', it was more along the lines of "lets teach it to talk and get high!".

She had 11 years with me before passing on due to age related health issues. I don't know how old she was (guesstimating late teens or twenties at least!), but I do know that if I hadn't taken her in when I did, she would have been dead within weeks, or perhaps even days.

I really hope the guy does the right thing and tries to find the owner.

depending on country/state taking the bird without attempting to find the owner is considered theft so it's a good idea to report this video to authorities if possible

My God, he just re-names the bird and that's it? I posted a comment on the video, we'll see how many idiots reply to it saying things like "Shut-up, that bird is lucky to have him", or "That bird is rightfully his now!"...Not even a single mention about finding the owner, just "I wonder if I should get him a larger cage?" and "I think I'll name him Nismo"...what a selfish, irresponsible jerk...

He doesn't care. He just sees his animals as ad revenue. If this is who I think it is he use to keep a cockatiel (I think) outside in a tinytiny filthy and completely empty cage hanging from a tree outside.
He also takes his young and completely untrained IRN outside without any harness or carrier or protection at all and let's him just hobble around in the grass and climb a tree. I haven't seen a video in awhile but last I saw his IRNs cage was pretty void of toys

inform him he's breaking the law and has just proven with that comment that he hasn't attempted to find the cockatiel's home and as such he has committed 'theft by finding'

lots of people asking why they're not looking for the owner and it's restored some humanity. But strangely this person isn't replying to any posts. I'm gonna see if I can figure out where that place is and report it to the authorities.

Generally speaking the law is that you stick up found posters in a 'reasonable' area around where you found them and to wait a minimum of 2 weeks at which point if nobody has proven they are the owner then legally you have ownership rights

Also that cage he put the bird in is in short disgusting. Covered in excrement and rust

I noticed a few viewer comments chiding the lack of empathy for the prior parront.

And those dogs and cats hanging around and sniffing the cages..... :(

He also has a video titled something along the lines of "parrot comes face to face with husky" and a lot of his videos are clickbaity titles of what sounds to be bad behavior at dog parks with dogs possibly getting hurt. I wouldn't trust this guy with a plant at this point x.x

from what I could find he lives in California and this is what I found

"Today in California, one who finds a lost[FN37] domestic animal is not under a duty to take it into possession. But if a finder does take possession of the animal, or "saves any domestic animal from drowning or starvation,"[FN38] he should provide it with suitable food, shelter, and treat it kindly.[FN39] A finder, according to section 2080, should "within a reasonable time" inform the owner of his possession, and return the animal.[FN40] A finder who knows the identity of the true owner, or who reasonably has the means of locating the owner, is guilty of theft if he fails to make an honest and reasonable effort to contact the owner and return his animal.[FN41]

Under state law, if the finder is unable to locate the owner, and the animal has a value of less than ten dollars, he may appropriate the animal as his own,[FN42] subject to the rights of the true owner; the finder is a "depository." [FN43] Under this section it might be possible to show the finder of a stray dog was in fact the "owner." In many situations, however, the value of an animal would exceed this amount and therefore require the finder to turn the property over to the police [FN44] who in turn must endeavor to locate the owner.[FN45]"

Oh, how unlucky that this poor cockatiel went to this guy's house, of all the homes he could have ended-up at, that just sucks...

I know that pets are considered in different ways by different states, so depending on how California (I think that's where he lives?) handles this and what the laws are for "finding" a lost pet, yes, someone needs to report him ASAP, as just him making the statements in this video "I think I'll name him Nismo", along with "Maybe he would like the larger cage instead" fully shows his intent to keep this bird and not make any effort at all to find the owner.

I told him he needed to post about finding this bird on his local Craigslist, along with calling local vets, pet shops, etc., but that Craigslist is the best place because that's where people usually go first to post an ad about their lost pet. I doubt he'll do anything about it at all, so maybe the law can force him to do so, I don't know...

If we can figure out what city/state he lives in, we can actually look on the local Craigslist to see if anyone has posted about losing a cockatiel near his home...

Salinas, CA according to his YouTube information...

I called and left these people a message stating that this guy has put a video up with a cockatiel that looks just like there's he's near them, and he's taken ownership of their bird already, renaming it and such. Hopefully they'll call me back ASAP so I can give them the details.

Great work, Ellen! I so hope that if this is their baby they can get him back!

They said they lost the cockatiel on the 12th, he posted the video on the 9th... I don't know it it is theirs.

can someone create a craigslist post to showcase the video to anyone who is searching for their cockatiel in the area, just to show that someone has him and can therefore take some form of action?
