B&G Macaw
Nema (my B&G baby-4 months old) scared me to death! Yesterday I looked in on her and she was laying down! I freaked. I thought she was dead. I have never seen or heard of birds laying down to sleep. After I made sure she was acting fine I called my vet. He told me that this is normal so I started looking it up to find more information. Sure enough Nema isn't the only macaw to lay down for a nap. I was wondering if anyone else has found their birds sleeping like this?

I'm curious. What was she lying down on. I'm getting a 9yr old B / G macaw and I'm wondering how she sleeps? Should I get her a tent?

She was actually playing on her play stand at first. There is a small flat part on the side and that's where she decided to take a nap. It truly was scary since I had never seen her do it before. She normally sleeps perched with her head turned not laying down. My vet said some like to lay down occasionally so if I wanted I could put a platform in her cage and let her have a choice.

Never heard of this, I would have been extremely alarmed. Spencer, my B&G only lays down when we're playing, he'll roll over on his back and his sides but he doesn't stay down very long 5-15 minutes most, but can roll over for hours. Since she so young, she may just grow out of it.

Yes! Zaffer often sleeps all stretched out and flat on various comfy surfaces. He'll do it on my chest and also on the backrest of the couch or on pillows or cushions. I think some Macaws may be more prone to enjoy sleeping like that than others might. I always find it adorable to see a stretched out and flat Macaw fast asleep, with its head sideways and its cheek laying against a soft & comfy pillow ;)

It is cute after the initial shock! She did it again and I loved it. It is adorable.

Milo is 5 1/2 months old and always falls asleep on me when he's out. Sometimes he makes a deliberate effort and squats down like a duck and shuffles around to get settled, others he just seems to collapse mid cuddle. I put a shelf in his cage when he first came home and sometimes find him on there when I come down in the morning but I dont know if he sleeps on it or just sits on it for a while.

I was also a little scared first time he fell asleep on me as it just didnt seem right for a healthy bird, but I love it when he does it now.

That is soooo frigin' cute!!! I wonder if other kinds of birds do this or is this something that only macaws do?

My Neleno does this too. He will stand on one foot on his perch and with his head, he will rest it on top of a flat metal toy in his cage. When I first saw him do this, I thought he had his big head stuck inside the toy from the angle I saw him from, so I ran over to his cage and opened the door, he woke up and if to say, hey you woke me up dude. He gave a look and back to sleep he went. Macaws are some nutty birds sometimes. Thanks for posting Joe

Plax im sure we would all love to see a pic of zaf sleeping al spread out on the couch!!

My conure George stole my heart by falling asleep in my hand. My Hahn's macaw Hahnzel on the other hand uses my fatigue to start mischief.
