We have had my CAG named Pearl for over 2 months now. She is warmed up to us and loves to get attention. But she doesn't seem to go to bed until around 8:30 every night and gets up at 6:30. She will not go to bed earlier. We are extremely quiet in the morning because our routine is to get ready and out the door but even if we tiptoe through the house she wakes and starts chirping and doing all kinds of whistles. If we don't uncover her she starts squawking. She doesn't have any behavior issues and seems in good mood but I've heard they need at least 12 hours of undisturbed sleep at night. Should I continue what I'm doing or try to get her to sleep earlier? Could not getting enough sleep deteriorate her health over time?

Thanks

she probably naps during the day, our guy is up sometimes later, especially when the kids are home from college, it doesn't seem to make too much difference~

My guy only gets 9-10 @ night. I can tell when he gets less he's very grouchy. He naps during the day when I am gone. I'm home now, but when we were working, this worked better for us. I haven't tried to change it because I dont know if I'll have to work outside my home again.

Okay thanks. I think I'll stick with what I'm doing then.

I am sure we all have different routines. I start to gradually dim the lights about 6:30 pm. Rosie will eat the rest of her pellets then. About 7:30 pm I take all food from the cage and tickle her one more time. I partially cover the cage and then turn the rest of the lights out except for small night lights. She gets quiet and goes to sleep almost right away. Her hours of sleep are from 7:30pm to same time in am. She is a good sleeper.

I had no idea they needed that much sleep. We go to bed between 11 and midnight are we are up by 6 am. Ours is awake those same hours. I am hopeful he naps while we are at work.

Does she have her own room that you put her in for bedtime? Or is she in the main living area? I think that a bird that lives around your schedule will, most likely, be on your schedule.

My CAG is the same way. She doesn't want to go to bed until 9 p.m. I put my others to bed at 7:30, but she is not ready. They have their own bird room to sleep in. But if I put Peppers in at the same time as the other birds, she doesn't go to sleep. She just chatters and sings and probably keeps the others up. So now I just wait until 9 and she is ready by then. I guess as long as they nap (which mine does) they are still getting enough sleep.

All my other birds are in bed at 8, with the little kids. My cag refuses. If i manage to get him in the cage and covered, he sits and talks...."good morning mommy" "hello?" Repeatedly. So ive stopped trying. He goes to bed with us around 12 and i noticed he naps during the day with the kids for a couple hours. Hes quite happy and it seems to suit him, so im good with it. :)

I'm guilty of having Alex 'run on my schedule' so to speak. I'm a night owl and do most of my work in the bedroom on the laptop, where Alex's cage is also located. He is out with me and remains up until 10pm. Usually around 9:30 he starts to nod off and will usually curl up in my shirt. If not he will almost always go roost in the cage, or find some comfy place (tonight was UNDER the cage in one of his old handfeeding blankets I keep under there) and doze off. At 10pm (he gets grouchy if I move him while he is dozing off initially) I move him to the cage regardless of where he is. Sometimes (but rarely) he is still up and actuve, but 10pm is bedtime. He is covered and goes to sleep rapidly.

I get up at 8am most days and leave at 9 (Slightly earlier on a Monday). Just before I leave I uncover and feed him, give a quick cuddle and take off. So he sleeps from roughly 10pm-9am or approx 11 hours per night, though it's probably more like 10 and a half since he wakes up slightly before I uncover him and takes 5 or so mins to nod off.

He also snoozes the hours away while I am gone, so I think he does get ample sleep. I do think it could be at a better time (I'd love to have him on a roughly sun down/sun up schedule like some) but that would cut into the time I can spend with him severely, so this may not be sleep optimal, but it does gives me and him plenty of time to chill and hang out in the afternoon and nighttime :)
