Sleeping Arrangement Question

My husband and I recently had to move in with my parents. Due to this move we had to put our green cheek from a large cage into one that fits in our room. Lately he has been more active at night into the early hours of the morning- playing with toys, shuffling his food and water dish against the cage doors, talking, ect. (Which isn't good for me because I am a sleep deprived new mother of a 9 week old baby that happens to be a light sleeper)

In our bird parenting class the instructor said that to get a bird to sleep better, put him in a smaller cage/carrier that's free of toys.

My husband's concerned that since he's already in a smaller environment that putting the bird into something smaller yet may make the bird resentful of us.

Any suggestions on how we can get our green cheek to sleep the whole night through?

Make his bed time earlier, make sure that lights are out and he's covered. My budgie's would stay up and play all night if I didn't cover them at least 1 hour before I expect them to go to sleep.

Merlin's "bedtime" is 10pm, the budgie's get covered at 9pm to ensure they're ready for sleep by 10pm.

Having a sleep cage is good, we have that for one of our budgies. She doesn't particularly like being in there, but she's then somewhat 'greatful' in the morning to be let out to her normal big cage with her toys and other budgies. If we left her in the normal cage, she'd just play and get moody cause she's tired. Silly bird.

I do have a piece of fabric that I cover him with, perhaps something darker to keep light out would work better?

I will try covering him earlier to see if that helps. I bet that while I'm busy all day with the baby he probably sleeps- then when I need to sleep he wants to entertain us with his bell ringing and flipping of his food dish.

Thanks for the suggestions! :D

Something that really keeps light out is needed. My spare cage unfortunately only has a 'thin' type sheet, and light is still getting through very easily. Some dark and thickish fabric would be needed.

Definitely the dark makes them sleep! My CGCC Chia used to be a pain in the butt to sleep in our old apartment. Chia HATES her cage being covered, whenever I would try she would go to the bottom and bang her beak against the bars relentlessly. Now that I am living in a new place my room gets almost zero light and I have blackout curtains on my windows so when the lights go out its pitch black. Chia falls asleep almost instantly in the pitch black.:)
