They need more sleep than we do. But they don't need it all in one 'chunk' like we do.
I think most parrots sleep quite well through the night and rarely disturb their sleeping owners. When I'm getting up for work in the morning Auggie doesn't make a sound until after my alarm goes off and I'm already moving around a bit. Though if I try to sleep in on a day off he'll usually wake me up. Auggie also gets plenty of time to nap while I'm away at work. He'd surely prefer to be out and about with me, but they do actually need SOME quite time during the day to sleep as well. I've heard that they need 12 hours of sleep throughout the day but I don't know if there is anything magical about that number ... or whether someone just made it up.
Parsley has a sleeping cage in an upstairs bedroom. His day cage is near the TV so he wouldn't get good sleep there. He is ready for bed around 6pm and I get him up by 6am everyday.
I know he is getting good sleep because he hardly naps during the day. His mood is much better when he gets his 10 to 12 hours of sleep. Just like me....I like my ZZzzzzz's!
General rule of thumb, birds should follow the daylight cycle in your region ... the go to bed at dusk and get up with the sun ... but I have also heard that 12 hours seems to be a "magical number as well" ... so in the winter months it's easier to accomplish than in the summer time.
