So I was napping in the chair and I have this alarm clock that projects the time on the ceiling. I normally don't use it when Skitty is around cause it scares him - but I was drowsy and not thinking.

When it happened it startled him which in turn startled me and I got up quickly and that scared him even more and he flew into the window. But after he hit the window he flew back the other way and landed on his desk perch so that was a relief. He wasn't disoriented, but definitely shook up. He's okay now, but I feel terrible. He seems quite tired, but his beak doesn't hurt when I touch it nor is his head bleeding (or missing any feathers) so I'm lucky. I spent a great deal of time comforting him and he wanted 'armpit scratchies' so I figure he is okay. He wants to be petted and held, so I figure he is forgiven me.

Glad there are no obvious signs of injuries. Trauma in birds are apparent immediately after the incident. I hope Skittle has a better day tomorrow!

and he flew into the window.
Arrggg....how scarry!

My GCC flies perfectly, my Suns, not so much. I keep showing and showing and showing them the windows.....??

Anyhow, I hope Skittles is O.K. Sunnies are so special. Little flying goofy crack heads. lol. Don't hit yourself with a big guilt trip, all we can do is try to do our best. Some of us birdie parents allow our birds to fly and some don't. Those of us who give our birds their wings need to expect ouchies once in awhile (I haven't hit that hump yet but I am sure I will).

Good luck!

I'm glad that Skittles is okay, that's the important part :). He forgives you. What a cool clock!

Talking about accidents, once when I had Robin in a carrier where the top half opens up like an old style suitcase laid on it's side... He was sitting on the edge of the lower part, when the upper part accidentally closed and went BAM! Cracked right on the top of his head ! Thankfully (and miraculously, cause the edge hit pretty hard point blank) he was absolutely fine. I was so scared there would be bleeding in the skull, but that was a long time ago, and he is fine now :). We were at the vet's office anyway. I've never made that mistake again.

I'm glad he's fine! They're surprisingly hardy when they need to be. It can be a bit difficult teaching some parrots the concept of a window. And ouchie, Julie! I can only imagine the stunned look Robin had after that. One time my boyfriend's little sister closed the cage door on Avery's toe... a year later she still hasn't quite forgiven her. Talk about a grudge holder [emoji27]

Thanks everyone! I let him stay up a few hours later this evening just to observe him. I think the fact that after he hit the window he made a complete 180 and landed on his perch that's attached to my desk
was reassuring. If he was disoriented he wouldn't have rebounded and landed safely, at least that's what I think. It's still a scary thing though - for him and for me.

I normally have the venetian blinds drawn, but I didn't today. I'll have to keep a better eye on that.

He's normally fine when he is startled - but certain things set him off. The tape measure (I don't use around him anymore) and also the projecting clock. I don't know why, but that clock and the tape measure freak him out. Not the vaccuum cleaner, not the washing machine and not even the stepladder. But those two, forget it.

Talking about hitting windows... many years ago when I had finches, I had a Blue Capped finch escape his cage and he headed straight for the great outdoors, only problem was there was a window separating him from the outdoors. He flew so fast and hard into the window that he instantly knocked himself out and fell to the ground motionless. I thought for sure he was dead. I gently picked him up and placed him on the bottom of his cage. Turns out he just knocked the wind out of himself. He stood up and was in the weirdest position I remember. He was hunched over in a way I've never seen a bird do, and standing perfectly still. I imagine he was in severe pain and stunned. About an hour later he flew up to his perch and acted like nothing happened. He ended up living out a full life span.
