Sisqo & GiGi-DYH & BF Amazons

Snow & Blue-Budgies
Hello everyone-

My name is Nicole and I've poked around on the forum a few times before before finally deciding to become a member. I am 22 and live at home with my parents. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 DYH Amazon named Sisqo. Sisqo is 10 years old and my parents have had him since he was only a few months old. About 6 months ago I started to become very interested in him and did a lot of research on Amazons. I guess you can say that I just took him over and now he's my bird. One of the cats was originally mine and my mom fell in love with her, so we kinda traded.

After doing all this research I found out that Sisqo wasn't getting the proper nutrition (mostly all sunflower seeeds), his cage wasn't big enough (20 x 20x 33), and he wasn't getting nearly enough attention as he actually needed. Basically my parents just bought him as a nice decoration for the house. DYH's are known for their talking ability and he only says a few words, and he was very wary of people. The only sounds he would make are grunts to let us know that he was hungry when my parents forgot to feed him.

Needless to say, since I've taken over for him, this has all changed. He has basically become like a child to me and now I always hear from everyone how spoiled he is and how he eats better than I do myself (which is true, but I don't mind). It took me a few months, but I got him a new cage for Christmas (23 x 36 x 66 dometop), and a playstand so he can join us in the living room when we are watching movies or tv. He has become a lot more comfortable around us and is like a whole new bird. He only lets you pet him or scratch him though for a little while and then he let's you know he's had enough, and he has picked up a few more words, but I know he will probably never talk as much as DYH's usually do, but that's alright.

Just this past week I realized how much he really means to me. I came home from school on Thursday and saw that he was pooping blood. I rushed him to the vet, they did bloodwork and everything, sent me home with antibiotics and said they'd call me the next day to share the results. Well friday I ended up driving him out to a specialist an hour away, having more tests done on him and he was hospitalized until Monday. I was a huge mess. Overall, I spent $1500 on vet bills without even batting an eye. I realized that is something my parents probably never would've done (not that they're bad people or anything), so it's a good thing that he's mine now.

That's basically it so far about Sisqo. Oh, and he is named after an R&B artist that was pretty popular around the time we got him. He had a song out called the "Thong Song" (if any of you remember it) and his head was platinum blonde, hence the perfect name for a DYH.

I will post some pics and more info. soon.

Hi Nicole, so nice to have you here. What a wonderful story about Sisqo, I'm sure that now you have changed his diet, and are interacting with him more that he will start talking up a storm. I look forward to seeing lots of pics and hearing more about him. Enjoy yourself, have fun and join in.

If you know Sisqo Hatchdate (or want to make one up) and would like him added to our hatchday thread just let me know and I'll get him added. You can either PM/email or leave a message in the hatchday Section.

Hi Nicole,
I am so glad u got a positive outcome with your boy.
I am really attached to all my animals and would sell a kidney to save them.
I also know that sick to the pit of ur stomach feeling u get when u know they are not well and they cant explain.
Sisqo is very fortunate that u are observant and reacted quickly.
Everything I read says usually by the time u have noticed the condition is advanced.
Well done u.;)

Sisqo's heavy metal tests came back from the vet, and his lead and zinc were in the normal range. The vet is thinking it may be liver disease or a serious infection. Although she's leaning towards liver disease b/c of the x-rays and that he seems to be responding to the liver meds pretty well. He's going in for more bloodwork on monday so we'll find out soon enough :(

I'm so glad that he's responding well to the meds and I hope he gets good news back on Monday. We'll be thinking of you, so please let us know how you both get on.

Sisqo is pretty good with her. She LOVES to give him treats, so he gets pretty happy when he sees her running towards his cage with a little handful of goodies. He usually just gives her kisses, but the other day he started to let her pet him. And now she knows 'Step Up', but we're not going to let that happen for a while, she's not big enough to hold him yet.

Good news from Sisqo's vet visit on friday!

His liver is getting bigger, and he gained 13 grams..so now he's 414! He's down to taking his meds only once a day, which is great for me b/c he's usually a grump at 6 am. But then again, so am I. Also he'll be on the Roudybush pellets for Liver Disease.

He goes back in 2-3 months for some more X-rays. The vet thinks it can be reversed, so that's good. I don't think he'd be too happy about taking meds for the next 50-60 years

And now she knows 'Step Up', but we're not going to let that happen for a while, she's not big enough to hold him yet.

I took Cricket to my little cuz 13th birthday back in Feb. (small get together, all family) Well my littler cousins ages 4 and 2 were all excited about it... and Cricket took the giggles very well. Anyways the 2 yr old wanted to pet her... of couse I didn't let their little fingers near her. But I desided I would see how she would do holding her with my help... first time my cousin had a pure look of horror on her face, so I took her off.... but she is a very brave two yr old so she asked if she could try it again..
So she has her fully clothes arm out with me suporting it and let Cricket step up on her arm... LOL, my little cousin was all happy about it she kept saying in a soft tone "Bird like me... Bird like me"
It was so cute, so I thought I would share

That is great news, you keep making progress Sisqo and you'll be off them meds real soon. :D :D

So this is completely random, and I couldn't find the thread that had people talking about it, so I decided to post it here...

I recently started mixing in some Zupreem pellets with Sisqo's other pellets, and I noticed today that he doesn't care for the yellow ones. They are the only ones left.

I remembered that a while ago some people said that their birds didn't like the purple ones, so....yeah, totally random. Like I said.

Yea, Tex and I were talking about how Ham and Iggy don't really like purple, but seem to prefer yellow or orange when it comes to anything, food, toys, etc. Looks like Sisqo is the opposite! Put him and Iggy together, and they would eat everything ;)
