Side by side cages?

Hello,
I'm still new to the forum. I thought I'd ask for advice since I'm here.
We have a umbrella cockatoo and have had him only for 2 months.
His cage is in the family room and when we take him out, he never leaves that room.

I have been taking care of a friends bird for abt. 6 months, and I'm not sure
she'll ever come back for him, so he may be a permanent addition to the family.
He's an Amazon and his cage is in the living room. When he's out, I sometimes
bring him into the family room, so both birds are aware of each other.

Since there's not a lot of activity in the living room, I'm feeling real bad about
the Amazon being left out. I was wondering if it would be ok to move him into
the family room and set his cage up side by side with the Cockatoo.
They would have to be right next to each other for space reasons.

The cockatoo loves my husband and tolerates me. The amazon loves me,
and pays my hubby no attention. The cockatoo's first owners (We're his 3rd)
gave him away because he was feather plucking because he was jealous of
another bird they had and felt he got less attention. He gets LOTS of attention
now, and still will even if the two birds are side by side.
I would never let them both out at the same time.

So, what would you do?

Betty
