Hello all and merry Christmas,
My poor GCC is still sick. He just started his third coars of antibiotics today. He has been sick with sinusitis for about a month now.
he went to the vet yesterday for another culture and more antibiotics. The bacteria he has is resistant to a lot of meds so the vet gave me enrofloxacin for the third time and uped the dosage he thinks that's having a higher spike will get rid of it this time if not ill have to do an injectable medication which he may prescribe after this corse anyway :( . I've been keeping him humid and giving him more vitamin A food. I'm am very scared for him. Do birds usually survive sinusitis (I caught it very early no swelling or anything like that)? Does anybody have any other helpful info on this sickness?
I did a web search and I just couldn't find a lot of info so I thought it best to just ask other parrot owners.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Never had to deal with that before and I wish you and your baby the best! I hope he would get better for you soon!!!!

yes, i have some experience with sinusitis. of course, i don't claim to have expertise, just experience from when Pritti had it years ago. i'm sorry to hear your baby is having a hard time getting rid of the infection.

what bacteria keeps coming up in the culture? i.e. pseudomonas, klebsiella, etc.
how do u get the meds in to him?
what are the symptoms you are seeing, i.e. nares completely clogged, or wet, etc?

i'm wondering if you can switch to the injectable antibiotics now?

I'm so sorry to hear your baby is still not well. :(

I, too, wonder about starting the injectable antibiotics now, and hope they will nip the sinusitis in the butt.

Best of luck, please keep us posted, and Merry Christmas to you and all your loved ones. :)

Thanks for all the replies and well wishes.
My parrots vet did say that we could go straight to injectables if I wanted, but I asked him what his personal recommendation was and he said up the dosage and do maybe 5 days of injectables so that's what I decided on.
I'm not sure of the bacteria name those names are so hard to pronounce I instantly forget. But I will ask when I get a call back for culture results.
Tak's symptoms are making a weird nois every now and then like he has a stuffy nose. He used to get a runny nose but his last corse of antibiotic knocked that out.
Also just wanted to add one more thing because I would like opinions. I'm thinking on getting Tak clipped tomorrow because he is becoming scared of me when I walk up to him do to me having give him meds :(. I need to be able to catch him and the main priority for me right now is his health. Once he's better I would like him to fly again. What do all think would clipping be the right choice in this situation, or what would you recommend?

Oh gosh, clipping is SUCH a controversial subject around here, but I'll give you my input regardless. ;)

Before you clip him ask yourself how long he's been flighted. Has he been flighted all his life? If so, clipping him may send him into depression, which may not be good for him if he's already battling an infection. :(

Was he clipped before, and if so, was he all right with being clipped? If the answer is YES, then by all means, give him a trim to facilitate giving him the meds.

Remember, the wing feathers will grow back....it's just all depends on how long he's been flighted, and how he is used to getting from point A to B.

During treatment he shouldn't be flying around anyways. Is there anyway you can contain him in a smaller room where you have a better chance in catching him without clipping? If not, then I would clip just so that you can do the treatment. It's already hard enough on both of you then for you to chase after him just to do the treatment. It'll likely to stress both of you out.

I know it's controversial and there is no right answer. In one of those people who likes my bird flighted. He was clipped when I got him, but once his flights grew back in his personality was definitely more spunky and wild (in a hilarious good way), so I don't really want to clip.
My other option would be to tape his flight feathers together during treatment. My vet gave me proper tape for when I brought him on vacation and had to take him out in the airport. I still have some of that tape left so maybe ill do that. Hmm I guess I have some thinking to do!

Hello again,
Tak is finally better!!! We got his last culture results back and the infection is gone I'm so happy I didn't need to do the injectables or clip him!
The only bad news is that Tak may have scar tissue from his infection, in his sinus I guess?? The vet told me that we will know soon depending on if he stops doing this weird beak motion or not.
I'm very happy he is finally feeling better and I wanted to share the good news with you all :)

That's very good news! I'm glad Tak is recovering well. :)
