I am taking my budgie to be put down today... :( she went blind about a month ago after ahaving a crusty eye for 2 days. The Eye got better in 3 days I thought she scratched it on a new piece of wood... vet said he didn’t know why the eye looked good. He gave her drops, but said she looked healthy otherwise.....
Fast forward a couple weeks... she started having seizures and became lethargic, puffy, falling off perch, I moved her to her own cage. I noticed bald patches on her head ( I thought she damaged it from a seizure, but it’s bald. She is also bald on her tummy... but she has been sitting on her tummy for a few days... She was sharing a cage with another budgie. They have been together for about a year. Any idea what this could be?
I am worried about my other budgie, but she has shown no signs of illness... hoping the vet can help today, but I honestly don’t have very much faith in that...

I have no idea, but wanted to say I'm so sorry. It is never an easy thing to do when we have to let them go. So sorry.

Thank you guys. It mean a lot. Who knew such a tiny creature that I stumbled upon on the school playground just 2 years ago would make such an impression on my heart. I just returned from the vet. She is flying in her forever home now. We will surely miss sweet Lucy Blue.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Lucy Blue. They sure do have a way of wrapping their little claws around our hearts before we know it, and it's hard to remember what life was like without them.

Godspeed on your way to the Rainbow Bridge sweet Lucy Blue, until we all meet up again!

Thank you so much for all of your kind words. And thank you for the link to find a vet there are a handful in my area that I will be checking out this Gus name was not on the list.... do you think my other budgie can still get this? They lived together and snuggled all day until I separated them about a week ago.. Lucy was sick (that I know of) starting with the eyes once the end of April. Do you think she would already be showing symptoms?

That's pretty hard to say for sure really. Since, as you say, Lucy was an escapee you found on a school playground it's difficult to know how old she would have been at that stage, and what existing health issues she may have had. Birds do metabolise illnesses a lot faster than we do so there's a reasonable chance your other bird may have shown symptoms before now if the condition was contagious. If you are planning to take your other birds for a wellness check in the near future anyway, a certified avian vet will probably want to do a fecal exam and draw a little bit of blood for testing. Blood tests are pretty much the "gold standard" and the best way to get a baseline of a bird's health status, and to determine exactly what treatment they need, if any. Ideally they should have at least one wellness check per year so that you can stay ahead of potential problems. It's always a good idea to have a health check done in the event of a loss like your Lucy Blue and I hope you are able to find a good vet from the links supplied.

Sorry for your loss of Lucy, but I think you did the right thing.

My deepest condolences for your loss of Lucy Blue. May her beautiful memories eventually bring you more joy than sadness.
