Hello everyone,

I have an African Grey Parrot (Called Rocky), she is 20 Years Old.

Since this morning, she has been showing very unusual behaviors which I believe are due to sickness. I've included these below:

- Open Mouthed Breathing
- Much Less Vocal
- Relucatance to move from a single spot
- Droopy eyes, frequently shutting them
- Head tilting upwards
- Seems to be a bit off balance.

If this continues over the next couple of hours, we are going to take her to the Vet. But does anyone have any thoughts on what this might be, or any other advice?

are her wings held out? Is she over heating? if so keep her out of direct sun light, open windows etc. But either way id be looking to call your avian vet. good luck

The best advise I can offer is to call your vet ASAP. I mean, right now. Parrots, as prey animals, will hide symptoms of illness until they can't any longer. Sadly, by the time they show anything, it's already VERY SERIOUS. Your grey is in distress. Please don't wait, it could make the difference in saving her life.

If it was me, I would be already sitting in front of the Clinic of my Avian Professional having called them on the way...

FYI: It really helps to have some idea of what part of this World you live as medical care varies greatly even within Counties. NOTE: CV-19 Stay-At-Home orders do not apply to Emergencies!!!

Thanks for the advice everyone. To confirm, after posting this, we found a vet with an avian specialist and she is now with them - dont want to take any chances. Hoping for the best for her.

Thanks all!

Hi everyone,

Its been really hard writing this message, but feel like its good to do so. Unfortunately its not good news (bit too painful to go into details) - this has been a very big shock as it all seems to have happened so suddenly.

Rockys been such an integral part of the Family, and means so much to us all. I'm only 23 so dont recall a moment of my life without her.

Thanks for everyones support on this, and sending my love to all your lovely parrots - I hope they continue to bring happiness to your lives, and you to theirs.

ok, so you lost Rocky, that's so sad :( ....my thoughts go to you and your family.

When you are up for it, please let us know how it happened, you never know it may help others to avoid or to simply look out for things

I hesitate to assume the worst, but if Rocky has passed, please accept my deepest condolences. The loss of a lifelong companion stings deeply, my hope is in time your remembrances of Rocky will spark more joy than grief and sadness.

My friend, I am so sorry to hear this. I do hope Rocky is still with you, but if not, my sincerest condolences. It's difficult to lose a lifetime companion. It has happened to many of us here, myself included. As I said, they hide signs of illness until they can't any more, so the sad part is that by the time you realize something is wrong, it's too late. You did the right thing. You asked for advice, and took it, getting her to the vet ASAP. We all do the best we can.

Our condolences on Rockys passing. THis is why its soo important to see a avian vet at the first sign of anything different or unusual in your parrots. Again, very sorry for his loss.
