Should i remove the band ?

MY one year old DYH has a band and i notice that she is a bit pink around where her band moves... could it be why she has bronzing feathers there ? i mean causing skin iritation but that wouldn't explain why she has bronzing feathers on her left leg...

I don't like bands, antiquated system put in place to control the illegal birds that were entering the country a long time ago

I mean it's not like the bird can scratch it, if it bothers the bird all they can do is Peck at it

I would have it removed (you can save the band so you still have the info on it)

And if you're worried about it they have a new microchip that never need servicing AND the owner at my bird farm says he does them while the bird is conscious (no sedation)

BUT I am still not going to get it chip put in my bird either

I would have an avian vet remove it if you feel it is bothering your bird, I would not attempt it yourself though.

I agree with Joe, I would rather not have a band on a bird and since it was started back when birds were being imported which is no longer done why continue banding? I also wouldn't want my bird micro-chipped though, call me paranoid but I just think an unnecessary foreign body could cause problems down the line. I really wish my dog wasn't chipped but it was done before I bought him.

I just had the band on an ARN removed today because it was an open band that had gotten clasped shut further than it should have been. It looked to be potentially dangerous to her. I have no clue how long she has had her band for.


However, my mitred conure has a closed leg band that he has had for his entire life, which has been 20 years so far. Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems with him and his leg band.



Sadly, anything can be a danger to our birds, including their cage and their perches. It's up to you if you want to remove it or not.

It's up to you, but I personally wouldn't leave one on. Theres no good reason to do so. Parrots are all domestically raised now, so no need to prove legal importation and as Joe said, you can always have the bird microchipped if you wish. You can request the band back from the vet to keep it as a memory or whatever, but a bird doesn't need to have one IMO. Too many 'negatives' (getting it caught, causing irritation, damaging feathers in the area ext...) and really no 'positives'.
