I have a male cocatiel about a year old. He lives in a cage 22x17x32 and if extremely affectionate. He loves me to pet him and has a huge vocabulary &sings songs. He loves all people and Flys to them singing and talking to greet them, but only let's me pet him. I spend over an hour with him every day and he had plenty of toys but he still gets bored during the day and turns to screaming and I just feel bad for him. If I were to get him a friend would I need a larger cage? And would he still enjoy my compony or not? Also should I get a male or a female? In the petstore he sat next to a male and he would allwase push him off the petch and be rude to him

If you get a tiel I would say boy. You might also try a budgie. My tiels get along well with my budgies.

I started with a budgie and added a tiel. They used to groom each other.

Then I got another budgie and another tiel. They still get along but the budgies bonded closer and my new tiel ended up being a girl so I have a bonded pair.

When I had 2 birds of seperate species my tiel spent more time with me. Now that he has a girl he is not as close to me.

Many say company is good for our fids and I agree. But there is no gurantee that the birds will get along.

I feel very blessed that all of mine do and can be trusted to be alone in a room for a short time. I can go make chop, grab a snack for me, run and pick my daughter up from school ( takes 30 min or less ) etc. And not worry about the fids.

I have 3 1/2 year old mail tiel who HATES being alone and is miserable when I have to leave him home alone. Even though I work from home and spend all day with him and even take him everywhere with me LOL... I am getting a second tiel as he would enjoy having another bird around. Even if they might not "like" each other... they will still keep themselves busy either preening each other or arguing.

I think it' sad to own just one bird... I know many might not agree... but I think having 2 birds is better than one. I look forward to not have to feel so dreadfully guilty every time I have to leave him home alone when he can't come with me.

Did you get the second Bird? When I had 2 tiels they started biting me (although they were not of breeding age), they totally shunned me and wanted nothing to do with me.

At the moment I have one tiel. I hang his cage in a shaded spot in the garden when I go out and he always has a few wild birds to chat with.

I had on tiel for many years and ended up getting a second tiel (both were males) and they didn't love each other (got along just fine though) but BOTH tiels always wanted to be with me and NOTHING changed in my relationship with my first tiel.

Now... many yrs later I again have only one tiel and cannot wait to get a second tiel. I think it is sad to have only one bird and my tiel HATES to be alone.

Personally I would get another male just for company. A female would be asking for trouble as they can start to get mean on you if they were to become a pair. It doesn't always happen like that but then you would deal with mating and eggs. And a whole lot of issues with the female laying eggs that you would have to deal with.
