Should I cook/feed this or toss?

I use this [crazy corn] cook and feed grain mix as part of Dexter's breakfast. I buy the bags and cook about 1/3 of the bag at a time, packaging and freezing that in 3 day portions. The uncooked portion is stored in my pantry in a tupperware container.

I've cooked and served 2 of the 3 thirds and started preparing the last of the bag today. After soaking, I noticed tiny black things floating atop the soaking water that looked like black sesame seeds. On closer inspection, they are tiny little black bugs - dead ones. I was able to scoop them all out.

Do I continue on to cook and serve this batch of food - or ditch it? If it were for my human family I would toss it in a heartbeat, but can I feed this to my bird? The bugs have been removed and it will boil for 90 minutes.

Would you order from this company again? Notify them of the bugs? I don't know how big of a deal this is.

Hi Dexter's Mom
I say if I wouldnt eat it then Plum wont eat it.
If there is nothing on the ingredients list that validates 'black things' whatever they are then yes definitely get in touch and tell them about it. Post a sample if ness. Think I would buy a different brand for a bit. Tell us what they say! BTW why don't you cook and freeze it all in one go for Dexter as it would save it hanging around in the fridge for a few days? I cook a huge batch of veggies and freeze and it lasts several weeks and is perfectly alright. Withdraw what is required on a daily basis.

The bag itself is not huge, but after the product is soaked (for 5 hours), then cooked (for 90 minutes) it plumps up to a gigantic amount of food. I simply don't have the freezer space to do it all at once. If I cooked the whole bag and packaged it in 3 day portions, I would have 40+ containers in the freezer. When I cook 1/3 of the bag, I have enough for over a month.

I decided to cook it up (since it had already soaked), freeze it all and reach out to the company to see what they have to say. I was able to remove the insects from the batch because they were floating, so I skimmed them all off (stirred and skimmed, stirred and skimmed to make sure I got all of them). My husband says if Dexter were out in the wild, he'd probably be snacking on bugs every chance he got, so I should just go ahead and use it.
