The pretty chicken has been talking for a while when she is in her cage and you're either not paying attention to her, or you're in the other room. Today, she spoke, not just while I was paying attention to her, but while she was out interacting. And not just once, but twice!

The first time was probably the most hilarious. She was on my shoulder while I was writing, and was nibbling on my ear. I got her off my shoulder and told her she was being a naughty chicken. She told me "no".

The second time, I asked her to step up, and then said she was a good chicken. She said "good, good, good, good". I am so excited! Even though from the first thing she said, I think she is going to be a bit of a smart butt.

Hee hee thats Hilarious...she certainly intends to keep you on your toes :)

Hahaha cute! :D

That reminds me of the time when Jasper was screaming and I shot him a very displeased look and he said, "No Jasper!"

Or when he reaches down to grab my finger and says, "Oww!!"

Hahhaha

My mom met her for the first time yesterday, and already loves her. She sent home a small ring of corn on the cob and an apricot for her to try. I was sort of surprised considering my mom was also the first person she had ever bit hard enough to draw blood.

I will say, though, that I lay the blame for that bite on my mom. She's never met her before, and she was good when my mom was holding her. However, my mom put her back in her cage before we left instead of handing her to me, and I think she got territorial over a stranger's hand being in HER house.

Lucky you! Pinto only talks under his breath and VERY quietly. Oliver is only making his hungry noise, nothing else. Ruby is, well, Ruby.

She was like Pinto for a while, only instead of under her breath it was when we weren't around.

The first words are precious! And like any kid, of course the first word really used in context is "no"

Wow, that's wonderful! It's a great feeling isn't it?! And a bit of context no less. Super excited for you!

To encourage it more, keep his most favorite treats within arms reach at all times. Talk gets immediate treat.

Parkers a closet talker like many ekkies, only talks when your out of the room for the explicit purpose of getting you to come back. By clicker training with a vocal cue rather than a clicker, when he speaks I give my cue"GOOOOOOOOOD" and come running with a treat. Keep it up consistently without fail and the speaking will come quickly. Must use his favorite treat and only gets that food item when he speaks. Not any other "just because" time.

Hahaha! Nice! There's nothing like the first moment that you hear them speak. Did she sound like anyone in particular?

Great Idea as always Chris .

Its the method I learned from Barbara Heidenreich's video (can't believe I of all people forked over money for something like that, but I did). It has worked pretty well for Parker so far. Hes still not very forthcoming but there are specific times when he has taken to talking in front of me, most notably when I put him down for the night. I almost always get a "Hey Parkerdoodles". He never did that before I started training him.

The key here really is to reward every word he says. And put him in a situation where he's naturally tends to talk. Parker ALWAYS talks when I put him on the shower curtain rod and leave the bathroom, and occasionally when I just get out of th shower and am brushing my teeth. So I always keep a treat in the bathroom when I shower, and again within arms length when I leave the bathroom while he's still there. Talk? Come RUNNING (I've stubbed a couple toes in the process) with my verbal "GOOOOOOD!" and treat.

Consistent, every time.

The pretty chicken tends to talk with herself when I'm doing dishes, so I'll keep that in mind. I just need to figure out what to give her as her "talking treat". What do you give Parker?

Given my druthers parker would get cheese because thats his biggest motivator of all time. But you can't keep cheese out all day, and that much cheese is muy malo, so popcorn is the treat of choice.
