Hello all in the past 1-2 months my Severe Macaws feathers on his back and chest have started to change from their normal colors to a rusty/maroon color and seem to be thinning somewhat. He is approximately 14 years old his diet consist of Hartz macaw feed, fruit, and some vegetables. Until about 2 years ago I was able to get him yearly check ups, but the local avian vet passed away and the nearest one is 2 hours away so check ups are quite difficult now. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this before?

Most feather problems are diet related and reflect the state of internal organs and functions.
I am not fond of the Hart parrot foods, too many sunflower seeds and too easy for the birds to seperate and only eat what they like. I would suggest a good pellet diet and veggies and only a small amount of fruit.
Also you need to get him to a vet and get a blood panel done to look at how his liver and kidney's are functioning. I know it's a bit of a drive, but that will give you the answers your looking for as all we can do here is guess.

Ditto to what Sandy said. I agree 100%.

Even though the vet may be quite a bit away, it's worth taking your baby there and having him/her run a variety of tests for your own piece of mind alone.
